    12/15/2007 - The Rising Shore-Roanoke

    Book: The Rising Shore-Roanoke

    Author: Deborah Howsher

Review:  I loved the concept of this book.  It is about the lost colony of Roanoke.  It is told by Elenor Dare, the mother of the first European born in America, and her servant, Margaret Lawrence.  The intended Governor, John White, was sent back to London by the colonist after the captain of the ship left them on Roanoke, rather than take them all the way to Cheasapeke Bay.  John White returned three years later to find the fort abandoned.  I did not think the book was executed very well, and I could not get in to it.  For one thing, I felt that the author was taking too many liberties with the known historical facts, and did not do so in a convincing manner.  I would be more interested in watching a TV show about the actual facts, rather than reading this historical fiction.
