1/11/2017 - The 74th Golden Globes In a single Word? Litty!

Can we take the time to honor the next words/ phrases which were used at the 74th Annual Golden Globes yesterday? Ham Hocks, Migos, Bad and Bougie, Collard Greens, Smoked Turkey, and Atlanta (the city) to round it out. Somewhere in heaven, Hattie McDaniel was wiping a tear from her eye, finally comfortable to take the head scarf off. As well as, Questlove had the 1s and 2s going so difficult that, for the first time, I watched an award show that I personally wished Id attended. Tracee Ellis Ross appeared as if a Black Barbie, as she sashayed onto the stage to collect her award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, the first woman of color to win in over 34 years. And, with, Moonlight winning for Best Drama Motion Picture, my soul thought it would rise and fly right out of my bedroom. To be frank, the Golden Globes were more litty than anybody could have imagined and it would be a beautiful sight to behold.

Viola Davis

Yesterday an entire nation watched strong African-Americans, and individuals of color generally, be recognized and awarded for stories as diverse because the hues that portrayed them. We had generational curses be lifted, a boy from Florida fight for his passion and self-acceptance, NASA liftoffs be successful because of the African-American ladies who made it possible, a man from India try to find his way in the planet through his childhood, a woman tackle her insecurities one episode at any given time, an Atlien fight for him and the crew to really make it within the music game, along with a cardiologist by day/ Super Mom by night, speak to all of us with the fictitious characters they embodied. Thank God there was not really a slave in sight! It proved when you step from the presumed money makers and depend on authenticity is the foundation, people will respond to it, oh and respond to it they did.

This is not black versus white propaganda, because as Viola Davis said it best when introducing Meryl Steep, to get her Cecille B. DeMille lifetime honor, and as she is constantly on the stare you begin to understand she sees you. That is all that people of color want, the chance to be viewed, and to be respected. Validation is great and lets face it the sole reason why award shows are intended, but it will the soul good when out of the vast categories you are able to spot one in everyone else, that even if for any slight glimmer, represents your life and the twisted beauty it reflects. Will the Hollywood Foreign Press, like a lot of other media outlets need even more diversity? That question goes while not having to answer, but the fraction that the Golden Globes demonstrated, proved that not only is it feasible in La La Land however it looks amazing when done right, and that my friends, is really a motivational story worth singing about!
