A STORY ABOUT A BEAUTIFUL OLD CLYDESDALE HORSE.

             OLD ROSE

 Old Rose was a beautiful old draft horse with a gentle nature and would let us ride her with no accessaries just climb aboard and hold onto her mane and ride where one wanted. When she was hitched up to the lorry I was always allowed to sit on her back and ride there because she was a steady influence on Doll, and Dad considered I was safe. If Captain was on duty I wasn't allowed because he had a habit of bolting.

When the error of the horse was coming to a close and Dad was able to afford a tractor, Old Doll and Old Captain were sold, it was so sad, Mum cried because those two were her Fathers horses. Old Rose was allowed to stay and live her life out at the farm, she was such an old dear and we loved her so, such a big loving horse with a heart to match.

One summer's afternoon Dad noticed something was wrong and he went up the paddock to look see. Dear Old Rose had slipped and got tangled in the fence and had died, he came back with a heavy heart to tell us, I never cried so much as I did that afternoon. The next day Old Rose was towed to a shady place under a big gum tree with lots of grass and laid out with loving care for nature to take its course. I like to think that up in heaven a lovely old brown draft horse lets all the children ride her and dispatches her gentle love, like she always did. Old Rose was in her 37th year when she died on that warm summer's afternoon all those years ago when I was a mere slip of a girl.
