A RETROSPECTIVE OF THE VIETNAM WAR 40 YEARS ON.All this week we have been watching the battles and horror of the Vietnam War. It is the 40th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan. A battle that the Australians made famous and died with the enemy in a hell hole of mud and teeming rain and gained the lasting respect of the enemy of the time. It is a War... It turns out, that the American Government and ours also, if the truth be known...Knew they could not win and yet they sent their young servicemen average age 19 to die in a war that they had "Buckley's and None" of ever winning. Lyndon Johnson the American President of the time said, he knew it was a losers folly and yet was somehow coerced, forced or talked into it. And then after these poor service men came home in coffins draped with their Nations Flag and others with tormented minds and broken bodies, they were treated like lepers and have had to wait 40 bloody long years for something equal to thankyou, to be said about their loyal service and bravery, in what was a terrible place to be sent to fight and die in the heat and drenching rains for nothing but government Folly. I ask you... "What have successive governments who have followed over the 40 years since learnt from this travesty of a war?"
