1/4/2006 - I just don't understand prayer
Posted in Daily Life

People always say, 'Pray for so and so', and 'our prayers are with you'.   I honestly don't know how it is supposed to work. It seems that prayers are meant to influence God. First, if God  has his master plan, and 'it's God's will", why should we attempt to interfere? When someone seeks a high quantity of prayers, like from the nation/world, does this mean that God answers prayers like an election....enough prayers and the request is granted?  Is it sheer numbers that are believed to influence God, or do some people's prayers outweigh others? If some people's prayers do carry more weight, who are these people: Those with the most money? Those in the highest standing in the church, although that smacks of politicism? Those who aren't super sinners? Those that are the most sincere? Those who make selfless requests? I just wish I could understand the theories.

1/4/2006 - Bingo!

Mom wonders what drove me away from religion, but then this is the main reason that drove me away. Religion is too commercialised nowadays...

I hated having to trade prayers and religious rituals for favours, I gave it a lotta thought and decided that religion was only a way to discipline one's own self. So now I do what is right(sometimes defined as justness), I am disciplined. I am at inner peace now...

1/5/2006 - Good questions on a spiritual topic...
Posted by troutdude
I suppose there are two main schools of thought:

1) There is no God, so prayer is just silly.

2) There is a God, and prayer serves some purpose.

The second school makes a person a theist (belief in a god). Since I am of that school, I will comment on your questions. There are two possible meanings for prayer within that belief system:

1) Prayer changes God's mind. Some would say God works within certain options and prayer influences which option He will take. I find that hard to square with absolute knowledge of the future.

2) Prayer changes us somehow. God wants us to pray so that we can grow closer to His heart. I tend to subscribe to that line of thinking on prayer. I should ask for certain things because they help develop compassion or humility or some other virtue in short supply in my life. I need to have my eyes open for a blessing from God, so I pray. Since I am particularly coming from a Christian point of view, I realize that God wants to do certain things in my life, but since He will not force Himself on me (though He could) He is waiting for me to ask, or understand my need for Him.

Hope some of that might make sense.
