4/24/2006 - I'm starting a new martial arts style!
Well my instructor finally did it. After five weeks of not being able to have private lessons, my husband e-mailed him Friday to say we were a bit shaky about our knife defense test coming up and could he do a private lesson. My husband didn't mention that he's having trouble because we get almost no instructional time now that we're thrown in with another belt class. Could he find one hour? No. His (new) girlfriend's birthday on Sat. and on Sun they were going to the Sox game. Geez! He lives five min. from my husband's work, where we have our lessons. We lug the mats and put them together and pay him $50. You'd think he'd need it. Attendance at his new place has been hair-raisingly bad. Wonder how he's making rent. He doesn't seem to be doing anything to better the situation either. Last week I posted on our forum asking if we'd be able to help at the tournaments like we used to at the old ones. THREE DAYS LATER he responds, "umm, we'll see". This to a person who would happily scrub the floor with a toothbrush just to be involved. Well, he HAD an enthusiastic student, but I swear, somewhere someone's going to appreciate me. Maybe this is why he's only graduated two jr. black belts and no adult black belts after almost 9 years of teaching. He's a wonderful person, fabulous instructor, and incredible martial artist, but these self-defeating behaviors seem to creep in. He seems to chase the eager ones away. I was stagnating, dying in that class. I'll still take it, but at least now I'll be busy, stimulated, hopefully make myself useful with people who are more like me and who can give me the type of training and environment that I want.

4/28/2006 - about unenthusiastic trainers
Posted by Soraya
It's so hard to stick with an unenthusiastic trainer no matter how great a person he/she maybe. When they fail to inspire and as you say, chase the eager ones away, their service is not worth the money! glad you've found this out and are now moving on. Hope you arrive at your fullest potential but only a good mentor can help one achieve their best!

Oh hey and thanks for the lovely message you've left on my blog. Made my day. Bless you.
