BJJ 3/10.07
2nd day: Brujo's Jiu Jitsu. This is the big time. I shouldn't have been surprised, but of the 10 students that were there, I recognized at least 2-4 people as fighters I've seen compete. Some had sponsors on their gis and one of the ones I recognized had a patch with the prestigious name of "Torres Martial Arts". It's not important to me that I be in the same class as real fighters by any means, but it was something to see and is a testimonial to the school. I just hope my legs hold out. I worry so much about them. Jiu-Jitsu is such an incredibly stenuous workout, even though I was able to skip the warmups with no problem.
1) Something I've previously been exposed to under the term 'pummelling'. They added some details like putting the weight on the forward leg (the one towards the underhook) and I have to remember to keep my head to the other side. 2)The previous went into a throw. My 2nd class and I'm doing a throw! After another great reception from yet another partner, I was ready to sign up right then and there. Back to technique: I have to remember to pick up a copy of the curriculum. Anyway. the underhook arm lets go and goes toward their other arm. The front leg steps through as if for a sweep. The back legs steps back while you 'load up the shoulder'. Throw them really high, not to the side. I end up facing the other way from where I started, go to my knees, complete the throw, and end up cross body. 3) I'll call it the 'if your hand gets stuck in a less than optimal position while in the crossbody reversal'. In Brujoworld, the cross body is done with the lead arm over them, the lower arm back by my body, my legs extended and my weight on them. I try to turn away and they follow me. I wedge my elbow under them, throw them over my head and go to n/s. If they don't follow me I should be able to get to my knees. This one was tricky. Let's see: I grab thier belt and extend both my arms to push, then I roll them, high, over my head. 4). The person is in crossbody and then they try to mount. The bottom person blocks the near knee with their elbow. KEEP THE LEG FLAT on the floor and don't turn away from the person! As they mount and their weight comes off of the near leg, hook it with the same side leg and roll to end up on top of them. It's not as easy as it sounds.
Then they did a 'roll' which is kind of like a practice ground fight. Me and the other new person in class did not roll. At first I was looking forward to rolling because I know some other techniques. It's just as well though, because it was very controlled; somehthing like getting out from the bottom. We will not roll until we've had 20-30 classes because we don't know where to put our hands and could get hurt. Laura did great! Laura is the only other female. She comes six days a week because "she sucks" (does not!). She is a white belt but it is heavily striped. For her job, she is a figure skating coach at a local ice arena! Today was nice and warm for a change and with those heavy gis, it was a steambath in there within ten min; no different from Wed. actually. So today she went right from the steam bath over to the ice arena!
