and my legs seem to think it was a bad idea. I might just go to class and try to work through it while I wait for them to heal a bit. Life marches on. I was able to go over three new belt requirements: 1) The backward throw. Remember. Thumb down, little fingers in the wrist groove. Turn their wrist. Step back. Inject straight down.
2) Center Lock. "C" their finger and trap it. "C" their wrist and grab it (use elbow), "C" (make a backwards 'c' with that hand) them fall down. They go straight down.
3) The side-by-side throw: Well, good thing I've got a private lesson coming up. Ouch, maybe not so much.
We started class doing falls and rolls which I pretty much already know so I was looking good. We also applied them to some of our more common throws.
IK private lesson:
I practically thought I'd never see Ling again, but there she was with her boys. I ran to her and hugged her. She is of slight build and quiet but her boys are all boy! I don't see how she survives her homelife; the activity level is off the scales.
1) Backward throw: Kick first (loosening-up move). Crank the wrist into an 's'. Step back and see where you want them to go. Finish.
2) Center lock: Clamp your hand on both sides of their index finger. Elbow way into them. Clamp their other wrist fairly high down and ELBOW DOWN right away. Turn hand like a motorcycle. Remember to stay toward the center. Also ok to step toward one side but not on the side where you'd cross your center.
3) Side-by-side: "Re-grab", step so you're 'side by side', lock their elbow, hold like a "c" and raise. Turn wrist toward you go under let go with one hand, slide hand up their hand slightly to get the lock. Then throw.
4) Defense against a bear hug from behind, arms free. They have simplified this; (in fact they used to do one that I already know. If someone grabs you from behind, you drop your hands to touch the floor in front of you, grab their foot by the ankle, and pull their leg up.) you brace your ankle to the INSIDE of their ankle, being sure to not leave any space. Turn toward them while you wedge your knee to the inside of their knee and push the same side thigh. They absolutely buckle. Don't forget to finish and be careful to stay out of the way of their feet on this one.
5) Defense against a full nelson: It's almost impossible to get out of, so prevent it. I'll start backwards; if you do get caught, you have to brace your head with your hands and try to wiggle out of it. Otherwise, once they start to "go up", trap their arms w/your arms really quickly. Do 'flow movement', come under their hand and grab it, palm facing out (I think). Scootch the pinkie toward the middle of their hand while twisting the wrist.(owwwwwwwwwwwwww). Turn out and step away a good distance. Do an UBE #5; downstrike to pin their arm, turn their body and expose the side of their head. Strike. That completes the self-defense part for my green belt!!! Not bad for 1/2 hr. and $25, eh? I know that however bad my legs hurt, sticking is out w/out taking any time off is well worth it.
I saw an updated technique list. The moves are the same, but raise the flag, they really did take off the camp/seminar requirements! I love that some of the kids' requirements include a few questions for each of the earlier belts: Questions like, "What does karate mean? What style of karate are you studying? What is the name of your dojo". I also like the fitness/warmup requirements for the kids (note, THE KIDS) that give a number of jumping jacks, 'good' push-ups, and sparring combo drills. I love that they've spelled out how long it will take to earn each belt. I really love that there is not a belt that takes more than 6-9 mos. as a guideline to earn, and people can also promote faster at the discretion of the instructor. Also, a requirement for a black belt is to have your required number of private lessons completed. It says there is "no charge" for this.
Gee, icing my legs feels so good. This morning I arrived feeling like I'd been away for years and my goals were way out of my mind. Tonight I went home all smiles thinking, "I don't care what my legs decide to do". Wow!
My opinion of Sensei Tammy went up yet again. I got so many helpful tips for these moves not to mention clear, precise instruction. Wow.
