6/7/2007 - Good or bad in general, this is my best effort...
.....but will I have the nerve to send it?  Certainly this would shame them into letting us use the book, but people would also secretly hate us.  I wish the people who have been making me stew almost constantly lately would just let up, use common sense, and be civil!

Apparently in Jr. High the slogan, "Partners in Education" becomes "Adversaries in Education".  I asked to borrow a sixth grade math book from Century for the summer. I offered to either rent one or leave a check for it's full cost as security for it's return, as we did at Meadow Ridge. I was told that I could copy pages at the public library. We went to the library and they do only have reference copies. It's true: I'm going to have to fumble with dimes and piece together poor quality copies because her school won't help her. Our daughter's tutor finds the refusal bizarre--this from a teacher of the beleaguered Chicago Public School system. I explored my options: Should I really try to copy the whole book?  I could buy the Harcourt book listed on Ebay for $69.00 and hope it's the right one.  Maybe we could impose on the lady across the street who is a substitute teacher.  I could appeal to OJ or Jerhling and hope to find a sympathetic person.  I considered asking the lady who used to live behind us, but realized that the school she works at is a middle school. Why fight bureauracracy?  Maybe we'll just her classroom teacher deal with any deficiencies in the fall.

Our schools tell the kids,  "We want you to work hard!" "We want you to succeed!"  All my daughter sees is professional educators letting hundreds of books sit on the shelves while she and those who care about her struggle to keep her afloat  I've worked the Market Day sales there for six years and for what?  A school that won't help a student by granting a simple and risk-free request.  It's going to be a long three.....oh no!...four years; my son will attend Century after High Point. Great.

Hello there, How you be? I must say this story of yours seems very odd on the schools part, to say the least. I thought the point of a school libary was to let books be borrowed for learning, studying and use of the students there in. If this schools libary isn't, then why do they keep a libary in the first place. You could tell them that photo copying every page is a waist of fossal fuels and energy plus is a polluting act against the envirourment and see what they say. Much more eco free and cost effective to let you give them a donation to cover the cost of the book and let you borrow it. I swear the people who are said to have brains have none. So what chance do our kids have? Good luck.

How's the book borrowing saga going? Did the school see reason?
I have been thinking about this off and on and I think the school is being a tad churlish and high handed. Please let us know what you had to do to resolve the problem. Love and (((Hugs))) From Dawnie. xxx :-)
