1/24/2008 - Damage Control

Ok, I'm probably the last person on the planet to find out about this show, but I LOVE IT!  Are you familiar with Candid Camera, where they play a prank on an unsuspecting victim and tape the reaction with a hidden camera? Picture (gratuitous pun) a Candid Camera episode that involves just one victim and spans a whole weekend.

They single out an older teen (aka slacker) and make him think his parents are going away for the weekend. The parents give him some instructions like "a technician is coming to repair the washing machine" and hustle it over to the neighbors house where they watch the show unfold with the host from his monitor.  Occasionally, he will ask the parents to predict how their kid will react in one of the situations and if they are right, they get $1,000. For example, "No, our son won't let them perform an exorcism while we're not home". The kid said, "Sure". Once some people came over to look at the house (which was for sale via "D' Amage" Realty) and these people started to paint a wall to see how their color scheme would look!  There is always a 'celebrity insider'; today Kelly Clarkson, wearing a work uniform, showed up with the repairman and proceeded to wail away at the washer with a hammer.  The poor kids almost always end up saying, "This is the most bizarre day of my life."

At the end, the parents return home 'as planned', freak out at the house, which is typically a disaster, and start asking for explanations. Every time the kid tells the truth, "Kelly Clarkson did that to the washer", he racks up $500. The parents look stunned and furious, and then the host comes out.

It's a scream--at least I think so.

A really good hidden camera show I can recommend is from Australia: "The Chaser's War on Everything". You can watch it online for sure, although I'm not sure where. YouTube probably. Their hidden camera segments are related to current events, such as airport security.

An example. They believed that the safety of passengers is well protected, except UPON their arrival at the airport.

What they did was the following: they loaded a van full of junk and put a Hyatt logo on it. They then sought out the Hyatt shuttle driver, and copied the name of a Japanese businessman from his sign, and picked him and his wife up.

During the ride they talked trashy to him and his wife, drank beer, etc., and brought them to a backpacker hostel. They offloaded their passengers, tossed their luggage on the sidewalk and sped off. No 'smile you're on candid camera afterward' either.

Another example was based on a commercial, where and Australian actress accidentally left her purse with her dog in it on the roof of her Toyota. After the drive the dog was still there, and unhurt. They took the commerical to the test of course, and at the slightest bump the purse fell off. After that they walked up to the actress and showed her something that looked like a bloody wig, and demanded an explanation. It wasn't a real dog, of course.
