The aforementioned babe is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Sure, technically he's a preemie, by 5 weeks, but in their video shortly after birth, he's as pink as can be, bellowing like a tiger...no ventilator or even oxygen needed. He's able to feed just fine. The kid is 6 lbs, 8.5 ounces, and 20 inches long for goodness sakes. My first was 5.5 and that was expected for me.
So now, he's in with the poor babies who are maybe 24 weeks or have horrible heart defects. Can I be assigned to him? What an easy shift. Don't they watch the babies in the newborn nursery? Don't they have a mid-level unit where he can just be watched a little extra closely? What a revenue-generator.
