It is ironic how conservative Christians are struggling to find a candidate that shares the same moral values as they do and has a good chance to win the general election if nominated. I had long thought that Sam Brownback would be the darling of the conservative movement and while maybe not winning enough support to win the primary, he would have a definite effect on it. However, because of the importance of the '08 election, conservatives realize they must find a candidate who has the moral compass they desire and has a good shot of winning the general election.
Some of the other candidates in the race such as Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Mitt Romney have all raised red flags as far as conservatives are concerned. Giuliani's record on abortion, same-sex marriage, and his three marriages are something that will probably give him trouble in the primaries. McCain is going to have to work to convince Christian leaders that he is conservative enough for them which in my mind will never happen. Romney is the most interesting of the three, because most of the distrust for Romney stems from him being Mormon, which is definitely going to come up in the primary.
If conservative Christians had asked my opinion, I would tell them to run Huckabee Former Governor of Arkansas, Prior to his political career Huckabee was pastor of several Southern Baptist churches in Arkadelphia, Texarkana, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
He served as President of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention from
1989 to 1991 and as President of a religious-oriented television
station.
