Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - How Many Tragedies Like Virginia Tech Must We Endure Before We Get True Gun Reform

First let my say that my heart, prayers and love  go out to the victims, their families, the college, and the community and as a mother at the very least I can share their fears

We now know that the shooter was a 23-year-old student from South Korea -- Cho Seung-Hui was here legally.  It looks like he had a 9mm Glock (purchased legally last month) and a .22 caliber pistol.

Before there was even a complete body count, the White House was pimping gun rights"¦

"As far as policy, the President believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed. And certainly bringing a gun into a school dormitory and shooting -- I don't want to say numbers because I know that they're still trying to figure out many people were wounded and possibly killed, but obviously that would be against the law and something that someone should be held accountable for."
- Dana Perino, 4/16/2007

New York City has one of the most restrictive gun laws in America and since its passage gun murders have gone from 2,262 to 629 per year.  Consequently, NYC is one of the safest big cities in America.

Bush sides with the NRA and against law enforcement on every major gun safety measure including closing the gun show loophole, concealed weapons, and mandatory child safety locks.

Concealed Weapons :
Bush Signed NRA-backed Concealed Gun Bill. In 1995, Bush signed an NRA-backed bill to allow private citizens to carry concealed handguns in Texas, ending a 125-year ban on concealed weapons.
[ Dallas Morning News, 5/27/95; Oil and Gas Journal, 6/19/95 ]

Bush Signed Bill Allowing Guns In Churches :
In 1997, Bush signed a bill that allowed Texans to bring their guns into churches and synagogues unless a sign specifically barred them from doing so.
[ Texas HB2909, 75th Legislature, www.capitol.state.tx.us; Legislative History, Texas HB2909, 75th Legislature, www.capitol.state.tx.us ]

Bush Failed to Enforce Existing Guns Laws in TX :
Did Not Prosecute Felons Who Illegally Possessed Guns. The Houston Chronicle reported that under Bushs watch, Texas authorities knew of more than 600 convicted felons who may have illegally possessed firearms, but the state did nothing to prosecute these felons.
[ Houston Chronicle , 12/9/99 ]

Gun Shows :
Bush Bowed to NRA, Failed to Lead on Background Checks Legislation . Bush claimed to support background check requirements for unlicenced dealers at gun shows, but declined to assist the passage of a state bill on that very issue. Bush claimed the federal government should solve the gun show problem, but only endorsed an NRA-supported, loophole-filled amendment.
[ Houston Chronicle, 4/27/99; Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 5/22/99 ]

Texas Leads the Nation in Number of Guns Shows.
Under Bush, Texas offered convicted felons more opportunities to purchase guns than any other state in the country through a loophole that allows people to purchase guns at gun shows with no background check. Texas led the country with 472 gun shows in 1998 -- 222 more shows than the state in second place. San Antonio police testified that 20 percent of guns convicted felons and juveniles used to commit crimes in Texas in 1998 were purchased at gun shows.
[ San Antonio Express-News, 3/18/99, 4/14/99; South Bend Tribune, 2/18/99 ]

Child Safety :
Bush Opposes Mandatory Child Safety Locks. Bush opposes mandatory gun safety locks -- instead he thinks the locks should still be voluntary.
[ Christian Science Monitor, 5/13/99 ]

Texas Received "D" in Protecting Kids from Guns.
Texas received a "D" -- the sixth worst grade in the nation -- from Handgun Control, Inc. for failing to pass laws to protect kids from guns. The national gun-control group cited Texas?failure to prohibit juveniles from owning handguns, as well as the states prohibition of municipal laws that are stricter than state law.
[ Houston Chronicle, 9/15/98 ]

Special Rights for Gun Makers :
Bush Signed NRA-Backed Bill Giving Gun Manufacturers Special Rights. In 1999, Bush signed legislation -- called the "gun lobbys top priority" -- that gives gun makers special protection from being held liable for the design and marketing of their products.
[ New York Times, 6/20/99; Associated Press, 5/19/99; Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 5/18/99 ]

Texas Supplies Guns for Out-of-State Crimes :
Texas Is a Major Out-of-State Supplier of Guns to Criminals. In 1998, federal agents traced 1,176 guns used in crimes outside of Texas to Texas gun dealers. In fact, Texas ranked fifth among out-of-state gun suppliers to criminals for weapons that could be traced; guns sold through the gun show loophole were not counted in this survey.

[ Houston Chronicle, 6/13/99 ]

Also bear in mind the Bush administration let a federal law that prohibited the number of replacement round clips that extends it to 20 or more, lapse, and just how does a man with a track record for depression and mental illness and taking medication for depression get approved for a gun permit? Well its very possible in the gun happy Bush Administration, just ask "Deadeye" Dick Cheney!!!!!!

Oh but you will hear the neocons defending the gun lobby, with such vigor and hypocrisy, and I will do a blog on that very soon!

This never ceases to amaze me. Even in Dutch TV hours after the shooting they had managed to bring before the camera at least five Americans who told the reporter that this wouldn't have happened if all the students had been allowed to bring guns to school. Disgusting.

Actually, no, it is not disgusting. There are numerous examples of school shootings being lessened in degree because of a civilian having a gun handy. Just one example is in Pearl Miss. when Luke Woodham went on a shooting spree, the Principal had to run half a mile to his truck to get his gun because of the "gun free safety zone" run back to the school, and stood down the shooter without having to fire a single shot, all before the authorities arrived!

The police can not protect you, the government can not protect you, that is why our founding fathers gave us the 2nd Amendment. It is a proven statistical fact that when a society has the right to own a gun, the crime rate drops because the criminal does not know who might be able to protect themselves. You need to read the book 'More Guns, Less Gun Violence.'

Heather, you as a woman, should know that if you have a man stalking you, it would take weeks and even months in most cases to get anything done through the courts. The police have to wait until action is taken before they will act! You tell me you do not want the freedom to buy a gun to protect yourself against such evil?

I am doing a post on that so I will reserve my full comments to it.

OK, you may have a point. If guns became legal in schools overnight in my country, first the bullies would get guns and start extorting weaker students at gunpoint. Then the victimized students will be armed by their parents, and if they're not too shy to give the bully the feeling they may actually shoot that gun the number of gun incidents will lower again.

Yet, we don't allow guns in schools and we don't have any problems with guns to speak of, so I think not allowing them the way we do now is highly preferable. I mean, the situation I've described above is the same we have now, but with an added two million firearms. While it may not be a disaster in itself, the potential for disaster increases by two million. You may think that with a school full of armed students there is no chance for disaster, but then you must tell me how many lifes it takes before a shooting becomes a disaster. If the shooter gets three shots of before he dies of gunwounds himself, and all three prove fatal, there are four dead. Is that acceptable?

In America it may be too late for more restriction. How do you disarm all these millions of gun owners? If the gun laws had been far stricter in the first place, I'm convinced America would have been a far better place. But hey, who am I?
