Journal Home Official Blog

Light at the end of the tunnel

Posted in News

After many, many months of waiting, (for me any way), wordpress has finally released a beta version of wordpress 3. What is particularly interesting for us here at Journalhome is that Wordpress is a lot more supported and has hundreds of very cool plugins available. Their code is a lot more stable than the ageing, no longer supported code that we are using here.

So what next for JournalHome?

1- I will create a 'beta' version of Journalhome, and it will slowly copy all 100000 posts as well as the +14000 users
2- User will be invited to move to the new beta version but the old site will be available.
3- New users will be offered to use the new site.
4- Then, after much testing, new users will only be able to use the new site.
...
Eventually the old site will be moved, (but remain active).
And much later the old site will be turned off and everybody will have to use the new one.

The main, obvious issue for current users is that their templates will be lost, but given the 000's of templates that are available I think this is a good price to pay.
Certain users will still be able to edit their templates anyway.

Please let me know if you can think of any problems.

Remember that this transition will take over 6 months to be complete, this is mainly because wordpress itself is still in beta but also because moving +100000 posts will take a fair amount of time.
