Journal Home Official Blog

JournalHome on steroids

Posted in Unspecified

Today is Human rights in South Africa, and as such it is a public holiday.

So I decided to do some work on JournalHome, (much to the delight of my wife).

First the statistic, I think I have finally nailed the final piece of the puzzle that was causing the values to be lower than they actually are. So as of early morning yesterday, (EST time), all the stats should be right, (and on average 50% more than they were previously).

But before I start the celebrations I will keep an eye on things for a couple of days.

Secondly, the database. JournalHome is getting busier and busier, it might not look like it, but it is.

We are getting on average 1 million requests, (or hits), on the database per day, it is by no mean a lot, but enough to give me some headaches.

So I have added some functions to cache the old blogs that are either not used anymore or that have not been updated for a while.

This should make life a little easier for the database.

This very blog, is cached, so I can keep an eye on what is going on. Caching the old blog should make things about 50% faster, (just look for an old blog you remember been slow and you will see what I mean).

Lastly, Moblog. I wrote this post without using the editor itself. If you don’t know what I mean simply go to your weblog and check out the ‘mobile’ settings to see how you could just ‘send’ and email to your blog and have it published.

Some even tell me that it is easier than using the online Journalhome editor.

I know some of you have had some problems with things not working quite the way they should, but I hope you will agree that those small changes are needed to make JournalHome faster than before.

Please, (please, please, please), tell me if you see anything that you are unhappy with, I will then fix it without delay.

Moblog is working perfectly for me now, but I do have a question about the stats. Are they really that accurate? According to the JournalHome graphics I get a lot more hits, than StatCounter indicates. Of course, StatCounter doesn't count my own visits to my blog, but those aren't even that frequent.

Stats

The stats are close to the real thing because of their simplicity.
If an IP address arrives for the first time on a page in 24 hours then I will add that user as a unique, (for that day).
I have 2 other tools on the server Awstats and Webalizer they count the total number of visitors to the site as a whole this matches http://www.journalhome.com/statistics.php, (roughly).
This is why I know that the stats were wrong in the first place, (and there was an obscure bug in my code :) ).

We count each user IP address, StatCounter uses to do the same thing and that's not reliable, I am not 100% sure that this will work for all users, (did you register that I visited your page?).
