Host 'mistake' brings us down for over 6 hours.

Posted in Unspecified

The fine people of http://www.asmallorange.com have done it again, they made some changes this morning, (of course without bothering to tell me about it!), and caused JournalHome and their own server to be down for 7-8 hours.

Amazingly, after causing such a down time, (a third of a day), all I got was.

"I apologize for the delays. I have located the glitch and corrected it. One of your DNS zones had an incorrect line in it that was causing named to crash. It's been corrected and all should be well now."

Needless to say that I am of course not going to keep my, (small), business with them, it is not the first time that they suspend my service or that the server(s) goes down.

I looked back at the tickets that I sent them and noticed that most of my complaints are about servers been down, slow service, suspended account and so on.
They never contact me, they do whatever they want without a care in the world about the effect, they seem perfectly happy to shutdown a site for a few hours.

This is a ridiculous way of running any business!

Second that!

I've tried to login for almost an hour. They're positively mad.

Oh, by the way, here's another idea on how to improve JH. Add a print button, for a printer friendly version that leaves out the sidebars, and the toolbar. If it doesn't take up too much server space, I think I'd like that for an improvement.

I always forget the title...

There was even more problems with the server but thankfully no one was really affected by those.
I was up until 1am trying to get them to fix the problem.
But this still had the cheek to imply that the whole thing was probably my fault in the first place.

As for a printer friendly version...I don't know, I have never done it.
Do you have a link of a site that has a 'printer friendly' option?
I could have a look into it.

Printer-friendly page

Well... take my Hotmail account for instance. If I print a message with the printer icon in my browser, I get all the advertising, all the menu options, etc., on my printed page. If I use the printer icon provided in my Hotmail, I just get the message I received. Another site that I think has it, is fifa.com.

I've seen it on hundreds of sites, really, but I'd have to come across it again to be of more help. If you click on printer-friendly version, you do usually get a pop up showing what is going to be printed.

For JournalHome, I imagine that would be the Blog title, entry title(s), entry content, the post comment line, and comments, if there are any. Each in its own font, of course, but no sidebar, social bookmarking buttons, etc.

It's more important if you have your sidebar on the left than if you have it on the right, of course.

Ah, I see.

The problem is that some people will want a pink backgrounds and so on.

But I will look and see if I can come up with a generic solution.

Good morning

Well, if you just use the printer icon in your browser, or the option in the browser menu you won't ever get the 'printer friendly' versions, where those are available. They could still do that...
