is GMail only for spammers?

Posted in Web Security

Everyday I have to delete between 10 and 50 spam accounts, for the most part it is the same type of spam, (that little blue pill or some unknown, illegal in 150 countries, loose weight in 1 day type of medicine).
I also get some real estate developers or some moving companies that seem to believe that JournalHome is the perfect blog host for their activities.

They are not really a problem, it never takes more than a minute to get rid of them all, (and I am always looking at ways of cutting even more time ).

But one thing I have noticed is that 99% of spam accounts are GMail accounts, spammers don't even bother using other 'free' mail providers as they know Google will grant them as many free accounts as they want.

Maybe I should ban all GMail accounts, or have them manually verified or something ...

Well, one argument against Gmail would be, that it is purely functional, and doesn't have certain features that for instance my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts have, that make it more fun. I don't really see how it would appeal to anyone other than spammers. That said, I do have an account myself. On the bright side I can't say, however, that it has proven its usefulness yet.

hi

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your comment, (and the exact same comments you left on other blogs).

I have removed them as well as the links in this comment.
I am sure you know why.

G Mail

I have had the same issues but when I blocked that domain, I was missing out on email from friends and family with gmail. From there, you end up saying "this one is okay and that one is okay..."

I have a gmail account, too. I use it to sign up for newsletters and such -- you know -- those things that often give or sell your email address to third parties. I often use it to register on websites. I let Gmail take my spam.:)
