Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - I've Missed the Words
Posted in Life at the Inn

It's been weeks since I've written a word. The Inn has been very busy... very busy. I had a full house last weekend and I have a full house this weekend. That's a lot of people in the Inn. Last week was the Midsummer Festival at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. I baked over 700 cookies from the event and talked to about 400 people about the Inn. I gave everyone, who would want one, a copy ofay Shaved Chocolate Cookies and a discount coupon for a stay at the Genesee Country Inn. I've been thinking about writing a cookbook with stories about the recipes. I've already published two short stories. I think this could be fun for the Inn to have it's own cookbook.  I use many of my family's recipes and love to share them with my guests.
Writing for  me has always been a way for me to explore my thoughts. A friend of mine said that writing was "the inking of our thinking." That makes so much sense to me. Sometimes I'll write and it goes somewhere where I've least expect it. One thought leads to another and "surprise!" there it is... out there... somewhere. I think that's why writing is so enjoyable. It gives me time to think about things and to discover how I really feel about it.  Sometimes I reach an "ah ha" moment and say, "Wow! That's really good." Other times, I finish a piece and say, "You've got to be kidding. There is no way possible that I wrote that." It feels like a line from the movie Secret Garden when Johnny Deep says, "No bad writing" and proceeds to delete the sentences that he just wrote on his computer. I, on the other hand, keep it try to salvage it, usually unsuccessfully.
I have a column now in a local magazine. I write about being an innkeeper and what this lifestyle is all about. But I'm a storyteller. I just want to tell stories.
I attended a meeting today with a group of other B&B owners. We discussed marketing issues for our businesses and creating this wonderful friendship. We have so much knowledge between the group of us and these meeting provide opportunities for us to discuss our business and share our ideas with each other. Collective, we are now one voice and a great support network.  Reen from An Inn at Reen's provided a delightful lunch of roasted turkey with cranberry and lettuce on a rolls with potato salad and cole slaw. Eileen from Springdale Farm Bed and Breakfast brought dessert of angel food cake with a light orange frosting with blueberries. Glorious!
Tomorrow I need to go shopping for a bit in the morning to pick up flowers a guest and items for a basket that I am creating to celebrate an anniversay for another guest. This should be fun. Friday will be the start of a very busy weekend. I'll need to start making more time to write. I have the ideas. I need to make more time to work. Time for everything and everything in its time.  See you tomorrow. d
