Cranberry Nut Bread
I've had many requests for my homemade Cranberry Nut Bread, so I thought I would post the recipe:
Cranberry Nut Bread From the kitchen of Deborah Stankevich at the Genesee Country Inn 2 cups sifted flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup sugar 1 egg lightly beaten ¾ cup orange juice 2 tablespoons of melted butter 1 cup whole cranberries ½ chopped walnuts Sift flour. Sift all dry ingredients together. Add egg, orange juice, and butter. Mix well. Fold in walnuts and cranberries. Spoon batter into a 9 x 5 greased loaf pan. Bake at 350º for 1 hour or until well done. Makes 1 loaf.

Hard Economic Times
I sit on my local library board of trustees. At our meeting this evening we were presented with the number of circulated books and people that patronize the library. The numbers continue to grow each month as this recession continues throughout our country. I asked our director why she thought the numbers continue to increase. Her response was that when economic times get tough, people visit the library for free video materials, books, magazines, audio books, and programs for the whole family. Then my question is why is the county and state cutting funding to our public libraries when we need the money the most for all of our citizens? I am an avid reader, myself, and frequent the public library frequently. The Monroe Library System has Overdrive, a system to download books to your computer. I just love it. When the weather is inclement and I don’t feel like walking to the Donnelly House to my branch, I can go online and peruse a plethora of book titles, download, or go on a wait list if my favorite book is unavailable. Unfortunately, my book habit can be very expensive, so the library is my salvation. “So many books… so little time!” Our selection at the branches and online are extensive, so choices are sometimes difficult. I still like the feel of a hardcover book. I don’t think online books will ever take the place of a good book in my hands. It feels real. I get lost in the words and the pages. I don’t think I would have it any other way. Today after my guests checked out, my morning and early part of the afternoon was spent cleaning and straightening rooms. I still need be finish decorating the guest rooms. I love to put unique Christmas items in all the rooms. This year I put more lights in the dining room on the stairwell railing. It looks so very festive. From my house, I can see the Christmas tree in the dining room and the brightly colored lights across the railing. It looks beautiful. It’s times like this that I wish I lived at the Inn. But then I look around me at the “little” house. The Vermont stove is burning brightly warming my house. The dogs, Bentley and Cooper, are sleeping in front of the stove, enjoying the warmth on a cold evening (27 degrees), while Sam, our Maine Coon Cat, is curled up on the dining room chair close by. RJ is sitting in the living room, Christmas shopping online, I’m sure. Tomorrow I’ll put the wreaths on the outside front windows and the garland on the sign. I think I’ll add some bright red ribbon bows to the posts to add a bit of color. I have more guests checking in tomorrow afternoon so baking is on the agenda – Cranberry Nut Bread and Blueberry English Muffin Bread.

Decorations
Christmas always makes me think about my mother. As I decorated the trees at the Inn, my thoughts drifted to Christmases long ago. Each one of the unique glass ornaments were placed on the boughs carefully with memories of family. After 60 years, some of the ornaments are showing some wear. The “Merry Christmas” on one was missing an “r” and an “a,” but I still knew what it said. The really old ones were in shapes of a Santa and a bell. Those, I think, were on my mother’s tree BC (before children). The lights glowed and filled the room with the warmth of the season. In all the front windows, I placed the dusk-to-dawn candles. They really make the Inn festive. I put the garland on the mantles in the dining room and parlor and hung the wreaths on the front door and in the foyer. It never ceases to amaze me how the Christmas season affects me. RJ and I are planning our Christmas dinner with family this year at the Inn. I can’t wait! It’s one of those few times when I can get all the family together (or at least more of it) to dine and enjoy each others’ company. Ham will be on the menu this year along with lots of Christmas cookies and pies. I was thinking about my Christmas caroling yesterday at the Monroe County Hospital and the patients who reside there. I can’t image being in that situation and not being able to communicate. I mean, I write and read and talk to people all the time. What if I couldn’t do that anymore? Are these patients trapped in their bodies where their minds are sharp and clear and their bodies no longer able to do what they would like them to do? Or is God kind and they are totally unaware of what has happened to them? I watched the caregivers as they tended so carefully to those in their padded chairs, some strapped in so they wouldn’t fall, others leaning so far back, they could not sit up even if they wanted. I pray for them. I ask God to be kind.

Trees
Today was the day to bring out the trees at the Inn. We put one in the parlor, one in the dining room, and one in the foyer on the Garden level. Into the basement we went in search of boxed trees, ornaments, and wreaths. Of course, I couldn’t find the tree stand for the parlor tree. That means we had to start pulling out boxes in search of lights and the elusive tree stand. We found three stands, all for live trees. So that wouldn’t work. I found the lights – and lots of them. No tree stand. More boxes were opened. Soft ornaments, flowers, garland, tree skirts. No tree stand. It wasn’t until RJ brought up half the boxes that he managed to find the elusive stand hidden on top of a box stored way in back. Once the stand was located, the trees were up in no time, followed by the lights. We ran out of time and had to call it day since we had to get ready to go Christmas caroling. RJ and I went Christmas caroling at the Monroe Community Hospital with the Scottsville Rotary, the Wheatland-Chili high school chorus, and faculty. The hospital is filled with patients that are there for a very long time. Some will never go home again. As we walked through the halls and sang traditional Christmas carols, some of the residents were able to sing along; others just listened. One older woman, while listening to “Silent Night,” began to cry. I was so moved that I got teary-eyed myself. It was heartbreaking to see so many people with so many health issues that confined them to this hospital. I was thankful and grateful for my health and my family.

What a Sunday!
This has been quite a day! After my guests checked-out and I cleaned the Inn, I moved my efforts outside to help RJ rake leaves before the snow flies. The air was a crisp 39 degrees. I could not believe all the leaves that were still on the ground even after days of RJ raking before the weather warmed up and we finished painting the deck. I lost track of how many cartfuls of leaves I moved to the compost heap. As the afternoon wore on, the temperature began to fall. I slipped a pair of work gloves over my regular gloves as I tried to keep my hands warm and my fingers supple. As I dumped my umpteenth cartload of leaves, the sleet started and the wind began to pick up… and I got chilled. I couldn’t wait to finish and get inside. Yesterday we washed and clipped Cooper. I swear it’s an all day affair. I wash him in the morning so he would have time to dry. His coat had gotten so long that he had the “Elvis” look. Wild and wooly! When it gets that long, it takes forever to dry and he hates the hairdryer, so it’s a multi-towel dry and then he gets to rub his body all over my carpet (lucky me). I went over to the Inn while he was “drying” and waited for my guests to arrive. There is always something to do at the Inn while I wait. I managed to keep myself busy laundering, putting dishes away, dusting, and cleaning out the refrigerator. After my guests checked-in and I made dinner reservations, I came back home to do battle with Cooper. Time to cut off all the fur! I’ve done this enough to know how long it would take, but his fur was so long that it took me a whole lot longer then I had planned. I used scissors to clip his ears and paws and clippers on the rest of him. Fortunately, he wasn’t matted except for a couple of knots on his legs. I left his feathers, which gives him that Springer Spaniel look. When I was through, I had enough fur to knit a sweater! At least he looks good. I think it took me longer to clean up! There was fur everywhere. I cleaned his ears. You know how spaniels have those long floppy ears. Well, they are prone to ear infections and wax accumulation if they are not cleaned regularly. Fortunately, Cooper lets me clean them, but then he runs off and drags his head – and ears – along the floor. Nail clipping is much easier. He will give you his paw and let you clip his nails. Bentley, on the other hand, is not so easy. RJ got the idea to clip Bentley’s nails since we had all the tools out. I called Bentley. Of course, he didn’t come. My couch potato was sleeping on his bed, which is next to the fireplace. He was way too comfortable to get up and be tortured, so a little bribery was in order. It’s amazing how a dog will come when food, especially treats, are offered. “Bentley,” I called. Bentley poked his huge head around the corner. I waved the treat in front of his nose. “Do you want this?” I asked walking backward toward the center of the kitchen. I mean, he is one BIG dog. I need a little bit of room if RJ going to cut his nails. First of all, have you ever seen a Great Dane’s paw? It’s the size of an adult man’s hand. HUGE! Bentley came into the kitchen; I gave him the treat and coaxed him to sit down. He wouldn’t give RJ his paw, so we tried to get him to lie down. I could not get him all the way down, so we rolled him on his side, I wrapped my body around him and whispered in his ear until he calmed down long enough for RJ to clip 10 nails. Once we finished, treats for everyone, including me!

RJ and Ink
It all started this morning when I said, "Would you please move the printer over to the Inn, so I can hook it up to the guest computer?" "Sure, honey," RJ said. Later in the day, after cleaning a room and my kitchen, I came back to the "little" house to find RJ watching a football game. "I couldn't find the printer cable for the HP," he stated. "That cord was connected to nothing." He pointed to the HP cord that lay across my desk. "It doesn't fit." "It says HP on it," I said. "It doesn't fit." "That printer use to be here before this new one." "I don't remember that printer being here." I picked up the cord. "If you want to try it, be my guest." I rolled it up and placed it on the counter to take over to the Inn. I know it will fit because I'm the one who took it apart in the first place. Little did I know that the next time I would find RJ, he would up to his elbows in printer ink. Our guests arrived and while I was touring them around, RJ came out to meet them. His hands were black. He started to go on about how the ink had spilled and was all over the table and he had to use almost a whole roll of paper towels trying to absorb the ink and wipe up whatever had slipped. Our guest was very helpful and offered a suggestion to RJ's ink dilemma. He told him his mantra was, "Sorry, dear. I didn't mean to do it and I'll never do it again." That was his wisdow from 32 years of marriage. RJ laughed. That's been his mantra for the last 37 years! But the suggestion of what happened to the ink is actually possible. Perhaps the ink had sprayed the back of the printer and over time it pooled in the bottom so when RJ tipped the printer when he moved it from the office desk to the guest computer desk., the ink poured out of the bottom. He said it looked like an artery ruptured. It just keep running, and running, and running! This made sense since there was some residual ink on my lateral file cabinet and all over the inside of the printer case. So there was RJ - hands covered in black inn, grumbling about it not coming off. Our guest, an elementary school teacher, told RJ that he will grow out of it. She may be right. The black ink is going nowhere soon.

New Beds for the Boys
Bentley and Cooper have been crated since they were puppies. They were put in crates when we were at work so they were safe and didn't create any damage. Surprisingly, they went into the them willingly. It was almost like they had a den to sleep in. Now Bentley is 150+ pounds Cooper is 65. The crates are the largest ones you can buy and they take up quite a bit of room. At our house in Arkansas, the crates were in the attached garage during the winter months and during the summer, the crates were in the "Jack-n-Jill" bathroom. Now their crates are in a storage room in the "little" house. RJ and I decided to buy dog beds and see if we could leave the dogs out at night since Bentley is getting so big. He looks so cramped in the crate. I know he's okay. He curls up in this little ball. That can't be comfortable! Now is stretches out on the dog bed, which is huge I might add, legs extended. You wouldn't believe how much more this dog sleeps! Cooper, on the other hand, is still attached to RJ. He will follow him everywhere and sleep at his feet until bedtime. Then he follows RJ in the bedroom and sleep on his dog bed at the foot of the bed. If I move the bed out of our bedroom, he will sleep at the foot of the bed on the rug. Go figure! Now I have huge crates in the storage room, a massive dog bed next to the wood-burning stove, and a very large dog bed at the foot of my bed. So instead of making room, I've now added more clutter. I need a kennel!

The Doe
There was a doe in front of my house today. I was talking on the phone, well, I'm not sure I was exactly talking. I was a bit upset and really wanted to start yelling at the people and tell them to just fix the problem instead of creating havoc in my life. Instead I listened and explained my side of the story. Strangely enough, everyone agrees, but without the proper documentation, it doesn't matter, not one ioda. As I looked out my kitchen window, this absolutely gorgeous doe walked out of the woods and continued right in front of my house. Her large brown eyes, ever on alert, waiting for something, but nothing happened. She strolled past by porch and kitchen window and continued up the driveway and across the street. Hmmmm... I wonder where she was going.

Happy B-day, RJ!
Today is RJ's birthday! I tried to find something special for him and decided on a Garmin GPS for his car. He's been looking around for a while and He really liked this one. All the boys called to wish dad a happy birthday. We spent the day staining the deck in back...ran out of paint. Wound up running out to Home Depot to buy another 5 gallons of stain. Lots of decking to stain. The weather here has been gorgeous so we were taking advantage of it. We started early and work until dusk. I think we should be able to finish by Friday. Then it's on to the next project.
I found this really neat pattern for a sweater shawl. That's all I can call it. It's made with organic yarn in a multitude of lacey stitches with big buttons. I love it! I think that will be the next knitted project.
My neighbor brought over a bushel of apples yesterday. Cinnamon applesauce! Canned apple slices! Choices and lots of them. The bottom line is they need to be processed soon or it will be all for naught. So tomorrow after my Chamber meeting, I'll be cutting up apples and baking. We have guests coming in on Friday. A couple of Cranberry Nut Breads are in order. There are so many things I would like to do and I need about 2 more hours a day. That should do it.
But since that is not possible, I need to prioritize and budget my time. With everything I do, I wonder sometimes how I managed to work a job outside my home. After I finish ironing this evening, I think I'll call it a night, since I'll be up early to make a few phone calls and get out to finish painting the back deck. I've been thinking a lot about paint lately (probably since I've been painting). I'm thinking the kitchen at the Inn could be painted and freshened up without a total makeover (unaffordable at this time). White trim, sage walls, white ceiling, new fixture (I need better lighting) and I'm thinking about painting the kitchen cabinets. This would cleanup the kitchen and make it look brighter. Hmmmm... we'll see how much time I have after the deck painting extravaganza...

November 4th, 2009
Today is such a historic day! Congratulations to the American people for a spectacular turnout for change!
RJ and I were out early this morning to vote - 7:00 AM. I brought a plate of Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Cookies for the poll workers. Hey, a sugar fix never hurt anyone. I returned my library books on the walk home and we had a nice breakfast at home reading the newspaper. I managed to get a lot of my ironing finished, but I still have a few more pieces to do. I probably would have finished if I hadn't gone outside to stain the decking with RJ. Wow! Does the deck look great! The "tugboat" brown is rich in color and blends so well with the sage green clapboard. and white trim. He powerwashed the deck in back and I think we should be able to finish the staining or most of it. I think we will need to by another 5 gallons of stain.
Fortunately, the weather has been in our favor, so outside work has been on the schedule. By the weekend, we should see cooler weather. By then I hope I have the rest of the leaves raked and bagged. Then I will turn my efforts inside. I have stenciling to do at the Inn, a basement to straighten, and a refrigerator to clean. It's that cleaning that needs to be done when we are not as busy.
Rj and I bought beds for the dogs. Now we can't get Bentley off his bed. I swear it's the theraputic mattress that allows him to get a good sleep. He looks so funny stretched out. His paws are huge. I'm sure this new mattress will help support those big joints. Cooper's bed is a bit smaller, but he still likes sleeping by RJ. It was a good purchase from LLBean.
I have a lot of editing to do with my book. I'm getting a lot of good submissions. I hope to be finished in January so I can submit it to my publisher and then I can get on with my own book. In the meantime, my article for Good Life Magazine was published. I've finished my holiday article and already submitted it. Time to move on to the next piece.

Daylight Savings Time
We have been so busy the last few weeks, it actually feels good to have a day to vote and work around the house. I've been postponing some jobs because I haven't had enough time to do them. Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful. Not unusual for this time of year. This afternoon, I looked outside to see the leaves falling like rain on the driveway and porch. So tomorrow will be raking and blowing leaves so the town can pick them up. RJ started scrubbing the deck to prepare it for stain. It was quite a long process to scrub off any mildew and dirt. I, on the other hand, was catching up with cleaning in the "little house." We met with the owners of a local golf course to put together golf packages for our guests. It will be one more service we will be able to provide for our guests. Oh my last article was published in Good Life Magazine this past week or so ago. I'm very proud of the article and pleased to be a contributor is the magazine. My next one is a holiday story. The column is called "Life at the Inn." This gives me another venue to publish my work. I wonder if someday I'll actually be able to get my book published. Speaking of books, my professional book that I am editing, Getting It in Writing, is really coming along quite nicely. I just received another contribution. I'll probably be able to close with about 18 chapters. Now that is cool.

Blog Writing and Sound Bites
I was so frustrated. Yesterday I wrote this piece for my blog and before I had a chance to hit post it disappeared into… cyberspace. So what happens when I spend all this time writing my thoughts and then it goes NO WHERE! Aghhh! By the time all my words went away, I had no choice but to close my laptop and go to sleep. So now I’m back to writing in a word document and then transferring my thoughts through the old cut and paste method into my blog. I wish there was a way for my blog master to work on preventing this from happening. I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact, I tried to post on someone’s blog and after a lengthy thought-provoking response, I was unable to post because I couldn’t read the hidden code so my response went away. No recovering that one. Another “aghhh” out there. I’ve decided that we live in a world of “sound bites.” No one listens to a complete anything. All we hear are bits and pieces of a whole and based on that we make life changing decisions. Wouldn’t it make more sense if we were able to take the time to listen to a complete anything and then be able to make our own decisions based on what we hear not on what someone tells us we should believe? Our media news comes in “sound bites.” Our newspaper articles are written with highlights, never the complete story. I worry that we are not taking the time to really understand what is happening in our world. I think that’s why I enjoy my work as much as a do. I have a chance to really listen and work to understand. Besides we should tend our own gardens first to create the best of all possible worlds.

More News from the Road
RJ is on the move again. He is being sent to Cinnicinati, Ohio, from Houston. The good news is he will only be a day's drive away from home. The weather is been perfect for autumn - warm days, cool nights. The colors will be glorious this year. One of my large bushes in the backyard next to the dam is starting to get a brush of red color across the top. I've deadheaded my geraniums and my marigolds. Pretty soon the potted plants will be finished and it will be time to put the pots away. Today I put out my fall centerpiece and wreath. My summer and spring decorations are now put away in the basement. I have a lot of organizing to do in the basement. I have to find a way to store my linenes that do not fit into the current storage cabinets. I started to throw out old programs and files along with carkpet Tomorrow seems like a good day to file paperwork and add my entries for the Inn to quickborooks. I am still very tired. This cold really wears me out. It's time to crash. I'll write more tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

On The Move Again
I just finished my article for Good Life Magazine and I have to admit it was one of my more difficult articles to write. The topic was okay. It's just I don't think about what I do - I just do it. So when someone asks me how to do you make people feel welcomed into your home, I really had to think about it. First, I guess, I enjoy company and people in general so it's easy to entertain. I treat people like I would like to be treated if I was visiting someone. I was people to have the best experience ever and be sad to leave. And I have to admit, some of my guests are sad when it's time to leave. That's the sign of a good visit. RJ is on the move again. He just got called to relieve a driver that's been out in the field (Gustave and Ike damage) for the last four weeks. At least I know RJ won't be gone too long this time. He'll be home right before J's wedding in October, so I figure 3 weeks on the outside. Today is he out there painting the Inn, working on that second coat of paint. She certainly does look beautiful. After I take him to the airport and cook breakfast for my guests in the morning, I should be able to get in back and paint that one section that he can't reach. Then it's back to the "little" house to finish cleaning and ironing. There is an Agricultural Society Fair at the Genesee Country Village and Museum on Octdober 4 and 5. I would like to enter a child's sweater. We'll see if I can get it finished within the next couple of days. It's going to ge a busy weekend again and I don't think I'll have a lot of time until Monday and Tuesday. It's a really cute pattern. The cardigan has an owl pattern knitted right into the bodice. When I finish, I'll take a picture and post it on the Blog. I'm into the second Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay and loving it. Easy, fun read. I walked down to my local library the other day to check out what else is new. The Donnelly House in Mumford houses our local library. Our selection is actually pretty good for a small library, but I can get anything I want from any of the Monroe llibraries through my branch. I picked up John Saul's new release Face of Fear abd Kathy Reichs' Devil's Bones. That should keep me busy for a while. Later...

Techno Queen
Yeah! I finally got a new laptop. I bought an new Dell XSP with a new wireless printer. But the best ever is I took advantage of a special purchase of a Dell Mini 9. How cool is that! This XPS is the perfect size for me. Lightweight with lots of memory. I love it! Now I will have no excuse for not writing. I don't have to share the computer with RJ because I know have mine own. RJ has been painting outside. The main portion of the Inn is solid stone with walls that are 2 1/2 feet thick. The second floor is stucco and the additions in the rear overlooking the pond is clapboard. The clapboard is now a gorgeous shade of medium sage with white trim. The stucco will be a medium gray and the doors a rich burgundy. He just finished planting our fall mums in a variety of colors. Sadly, the cosmos are at the end of their season and it's time to cut them down and prepare the ground for the winter season. Tomorrow is already the first day of fall. I'm always surprised that the summer ends so quickly. Our upcoming fall season looks busy with guests visiting family, planning getaways, vacationing i the Rochester and Finger Lakes, or visiting the Genesee Country Village and Museum. There is so much to do in the area we surprise ourselves sometimes by taking advantage of some of the activities when we can get away. I took a ride to the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard to visit the chapel and pick up my Monk's bread. This is where the Trappists Monk's bake their breads and make their jams and jellies. They bake fruit cakes, brownies, and decadent chocolate delights. The chapel is a very peaceful place and offers a time for reflection and prayer. I try to get down there as much as possible. It's a short drive, only 15 minutes, and wll worth it. Many of my guests who visit Geneseo or Letchworth State Park will make the side trip and when they return they are always pleased to have taken the time. Living out in the country so close to nature, you can feel the wonder and awe all around. This morning during breakfast, my guests were enjoying good food, good conversation, and good companionship, when one of them looked out to see our ducks on the pond. Their tail feathers were up in the air as they groped under the surface for food. In the evening, the native brown trout and native brook trout can be seen swimming through the crystal clear water and poking through the water to nip at insects flying too close to the surface.t It's time to start getting our wood cut and split for the heating season. RJ already cut up one tree and I started to gather kindling. This is will a job we will do over the next month. It'll take RJ a good couple of weekends to cut up what we already have down. Till later...

I've Missed the Words
It's been weeks since I've written a word. The Inn has been very busy... very busy. I had a full house last weekend and I have a full house this weekend. That's a lot of people in the Inn. Last week was the Midsummer Festival at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. I baked over 700 cookies from the event and talked to about 400 people about the Inn. I gave everyone, who would want one, a copy ofay Shaved Chocolate Cookies and a discount coupon for a stay at the Genesee Country Inn. I've been thinking about writing a cookbook with stories about the recipes. I've already published two short stories. I think this could be fun for the Inn to have it's own cookbook. I use many of my family's recipes and love to share them with my guests. Writing for me has always been a way for me to explore my thoughts. A friend of mine said that writing was "the inking of our thinking." That makes so much sense to me. Sometimes I'll write and it goes somewhere where I've least expect it. One thought leads to another and "surprise!" there it is... out there... somewhere. I think that's why writing is so enjoyable. It gives me time to think about things and to discover how I really feel about it. Sometimes I reach an "ah ha" moment and say, "Wow! That's really good." Other times, I finish a piece and say, "You've got to be kidding. There is no way possible that I wrote that." It feels like a line from the movie Secret Garden when Johnny Deep says, "No bad writing" and proceeds to delete the sentences that he just wrote on his computer. I, on the other hand, keep it try to salvage it, usually unsuccessfully. I have a column now in a local magazine. I write about being an innkeeper and what this lifestyle is all about. But I'm a storyteller. I just want to tell stories. I attended a meeting today with a group of other B&B owners. We discussed marketing issues for our businesses and creating this wonderful friendship. We have so much knowledge between the group of us and these meeting provide opportunities for us to discuss our business and share our ideas with each other. Collective, we are now one voice and a great support network. Reen from An Inn at Reen's provided a delightful lunch of roasted turkey with cranberry and lettuce on a rolls with potato salad and cole slaw. Eileen from Springdale Farm Bed and Breakfast brought dessert of angel food cake with a light orange frosting with blueberries. Glorious! Tomorrow I need to go shopping for a bit in the morning to pick up flowers a guest and items for a basket that I am creating to celebrate an anniversay for another guest. This should be fun. Friday will be the start of a very busy weekend. I'll need to start making more time to write. I have the ideas. I need to make more time to work. Time for everything and everything in its time. See you tomorrow. d

Herbs, work, and JC
I have been so busy since RJ left on another excursion. Between guests, gardening, baking, cleaning, my time has been at a premium. This morning, 2 of my guests asked if they could walk Bentley and Cooper. What a godsend! The boys really enjoyed walking in the MacKay Nature Reserve. I managed to finish planting today. All the pots are out and filled with the most gorgeous colors. Even my herb garden is taking off. You would not believe my mint! I have it growing next to the fountain. It's already 2 feet high and full of big, beautiful leaves and flavorful. The scent is full and strong. The leaves will be fabulous in ice tea! My chives are florishing! It looks like it will be a great season for herbs. I picked up a couple of good movies: 28 Weeks Later, Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber, and Cloverfield. What a nice selection of movies: a zombie flick, horror musical, and a creature feature. God, I love the genre! I just finished "The Gingerbread Girl" by Stephen King. Good story! I really think his recent work is so good. I loved Duma Key. So many books - so little time. I hope the weather holds for tomorrow. I would like to finish the flower beds and finish weeding the front of the Inn. It takes so long since we have quite a lot of property to maintain. It is so much easier when RJ is around. On an aside, I would like to acknowledge my brother-in-law, JC. He called to tell me I never mention him in my blog except to call him my brother-in-law. So hence forth, I will refer to my brother-in-law as JC and he will not have "a bone to pick with me" anymore. So JC, this is for you... Good night, all. See you tomorrow.

Away too long...
I cannot believe that I haven't written in such a long time. The days really slip away at the Inn when season hits. My next day off is June 11, and with a little bit of luck, that day will go away and it won't be until the end of the month that I have a day. Actually that's really okay. It's back to the old adage "Make hay while the sun shines!" We have been busy with guests, meetings, and work around the Inn. I've managed to finish 3 of the flower beds, which will leave 2 more. And that's just the garden in front of the gazebo. I still have the garden next to the McGinnis Room and the fountain to tend. RJ got the pump working today, Yea! $400 later, the fountain is shooting 20 feet into the air. It is so high now that it can be seen by the rooms on the second floor. I managed to get to Buffalo visit Aunt Arlene. She is having some work done on her house and invited me over as the house was being inspected. All went well and she is moving on to the next project. (Gee, sounds like me... one project after another!) I went out with RJ and friends to see Ironman. It is definitely worth seeing. Robert Downing, Jr. was great, the story line was interesting, and the diaglogue well done. Then I watched Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp. I really like him as an actor and he did not disappoint me in this one either. He is not a professional singer, but did a remarkable job in this musical. It certainly didn't hurt that I liked the story. It's based on The Barber of Serville. Good job, Johnny. We had a dinner meeting here this week. Those are tough days. I go all morning with breakfast and rooms to turn around and get back into the kitchen for dinner. Unfortunately, on that day I needed to pick up supplies, too, because of the holiday. It just got to be a long, crazy day. I crashed big time and got up early to take care of my guests who were leaving early. Tomorrow will be another early morning. My guests are all businessmen and need to out by 7:00 AM and we have more guests checking-in tomorrow afternoon. I have another meeting tomorrow so RJ will be left behind to check everyone in. Ah, and so the saga of the Innkeeper goes on. Now if I could add a little more time to my days, I think I might be able to keep up with my life.

Full day
We had a lovely breakfast with my guests from Massachusetts and Canada. Good conversation and a lot of laughter. Once everyone had checked out, the daily work began. I was afraid to start working outside because I knew I would never get my inside work done. I cleaned rooms, laundered, vacuumed, washed floors, washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen, and I was able to get 2 coats of paint on the bathroom walls in the Barcklow before I called it a day and went home. Once I got home, I took care of the dogs, weeded part of the front yard, grabbed a bite to eat (leftovers again), baked Italian bread, and ripped out 3 hems that I needed to redo to finished my curtains for the French doors. That was enough for today. Tomorrow I have 9 rooms coming in. I thought in the morning I would bake another cranberry nut bread and an herb bread and finish my curtains. It's late and I need to go to bed. I'll have a tough time getting up in the morning if I stay up any later. I have things to write in the morning so it's time to call it a day... a day. Good night.
