Posted in Life at the Inn

Today is such a historic day! Congratulations to the American people for a spectacular turnout for change!

RJ and I were out early this morning to vote - 7:00 AM. I brought a plate of Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Cookies for the poll workers. Hey, a sugar fix never hurt anyone. I returned my library books on the walk home and we had a nice breakfast at home reading the newspaper.  I managed to get a lot of my ironing finished, but I still have a few more pieces to do. I probably would have finished if I hadn't gone outside to stain the decking with RJ. Wow! Does the deck look great! The "tugboat" brown is rich in color and blends so well with the sage green clapboard. and white trim.  He powerwashed the deck in back and I think we should be able to finish the staining or most of it. I think we will need to by another 5 gallons of stain.

Fortunately, the weather has been in our favor, so outside work has been on the schedule. By the weekend, we should see cooler weather. By then I hope I have the rest of the leaves raked and bagged. Then I will turn my efforts inside. I have stenciling to do at the Inn, a basement to straighten, and a refrigerator to clean. It's that cleaning that needs to be done when we are not as busy.

Rj and I bought beds for the dogs. Now we can't get Bentley off his bed. I swear it's the theraputic mattress that allows him to get a good sleep. He looks so funny stretched out. His paws are huge. I'm sure this new mattress will help support those big joints.  Cooper's bed is a bit smaller, but he still likes sleeping by RJ.  It was a good purchase from LLBean.

I have a lot of editing to do with my book. I'm getting a lot of good submissions. I hope to be finished in January so I can submit it to my publisher and then I can get on with my own book. In the meantime, my article for Good Life Magazine was published. I've finished my holiday article and already submitted it. Time to move on to the next piece.

Monday, November 3, 2008 - Daylight Savings Time
Posted in Life at the Inn

We have been so busy the last few weeks, it actually feels good to have a day to vote and work around the house. I've been postponing some jobs because I haven't had enough time to do them.  Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful. Not unusual for this time of year. This afternoon, I looked outside to see the leaves falling like rain on the driveway and porch.  So tomorrow will be raking and blowing leaves so the town can pick them up.

RJ started scrubbing the deck to prepare it for stain. It was quite a long process to scrub off any mildew and dirt. I, on the other hand, was catching up with cleaning in the "little house."

We met with the owners of a local golf course to put together golf packages for our guests. It will be one more service we will be able to provide for our guests.

Oh my last article was published in Good Life Magazine this past week or so ago.  I'm very proud of the article and pleased to be a contributor is the magazine. My next one is a holiday story. The column is called "Life at the Inn."  This gives me another venue to publish my work.  I wonder if someday I'll actually be able to get my book published.

Speaking of books, my professional book that I am editing, Getting It in Writing, is really coming along quite nicely.  I just received another contribution. I'll probably be able to close with about 18 chapters. Now that is cool.

Saturday, October 18, 2008 - Florida and a New Chapter
Posted in Personal Musings

We arrived yesterday in Florida for our son Jason and his bride Jennifer's wedding.  Yesterday, we spent a wonderful evening sharing time and good food with family and friends.  It's times like this that I miss living so far away from all the boys. Michael and Jessie flew in from LA and Nicholas is coming in this afternoon. The blending of families can be a joyous time, especially when two people are so well matched.

Today will be a fun-filled day with manicures, rehearsal, and a rehearsal dinner outside under the beautiful Florida skies.  I am afraid this time together will be over way too fast and I will have to leave my children to go back to my world of innkeeping in New York.  The kids had obviously taken great pains to plan the wedding of their dreams with lots of themselves intertwined in the festivities. J and J had make their own wedding cake (no surprise since that is what they do - bake cakes!)  The handmade truffles (their own creations) look divine and almost sinful! *she can't wait to indulge in one of those delectable treats*

Before I know it, tomorrow will be here and we will be at the Baughman Center witnessing the marriage of two wonderful people. I pray their lives together will be loving, fruitful, and blessed.

I love you  both... mom

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - Blog Writing and Sound Bites
Posted in Life at the Inn

I was so frustrated. Yesterday I wrote this piece for my blog and before I had a chance to hit post it disappeared into… cyberspace. So what happens when I spend all this time writing my thoughts and then it goes NO WHERE! Aghhh! By the time all my words went away, I had no choice but to close my laptop and go to sleep.

So now I’m back to writing in a word document and then transferring my thoughts through the old cut and paste method into my blog.  I wish there was a way for my blog master to work on preventing this from happening. I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact, I tried to post on someone’s blog and after a lengthy thought-provoking response, I was unable to post because I couldn’t read the hidden code so my response went away. No recovering that one. Another “aghhh” out there.

I’ve decided that we live in a world of “sound bites.” No one listens to a complete anything.  All we hear are bits and pieces of a whole and based on that we make life changing decisions.  Wouldn’t it make more sense if we were able to take the time to listen to a complete anything and then be able to make our own decisions based on what we hear not on what someone tells us we should believe?  Our media news comes in “sound bites.” Our newspaper articles are written with highlights, never the complete story.  I worry that we are not taking the time to really understand what is happening in our world.

I think that’s why I enjoy my work as much as a do. I have a chance to really listen and work to understand.  Besides we should tend our own gardens first to create the best of all possible worlds.

Thursday, September 25, 2008 - More News from the Road
Posted in Life at the Inn

RJ is on the move again. He is being sent to Cinnicinati, Ohio, from Houston. The good news is he will only be a day's drive away from home. The weather is been perfect for autumn - warm days, cool nights. The colors will be glorious this year. One of my large bushes in the backyard next to the dam is starting to get a brush of red color across the top.  I've deadheaded my geraniums and my marigolds. Pretty soon the potted plants will be finished and it will be time to put the pots away.  Today I put out my fall centerpiece and wreath. My summer and spring decorations are now put away in the basement. I have a lot of organizing to do in the basement.  I have to find a way to store my linenes that do not fit into the current storage cabinets. I started to throw out old programs and files along with carkpet
Tomorrow seems like a good day to file paperwork and add my entries for the Inn to quickborooks.
I am still very tired. This cold really wears me out. It's time to crash. I'll write more tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 - On The Move Again
Posted in Life at the Inn

I just finished my article for Good Life Magazine and I have to admit it was one of my more difficult articles to write. The topic was okay. It's just I don't think about what I do - I just do it. So when someone asks me how to do you make people feel welcomed into your home, I really had to think about it. First, I guess, I enjoy company and people in general so it's easy to entertain. I treat people like I would like to be treated if I was visiting someone. I was people to have the best experience ever and be sad to leave. And I have to admit, some of my guests are sad when it's time to leave. That's the sign of a good visit.
RJ is on the move again. He just got called to relieve a driver that's been out in the field (Gustave and Ike damage) for the last four weeks.  At least I know RJ won't be gone too long this time. He'll be home right before J's wedding in October, so I figure 3 weeks on the outside.  Today is he out there painting the Inn, working on that second coat of paint. She certainly does look beautiful.  After I take him to the airport and cook breakfast for my guests in the morning, I should be able to get in back and paint that one section that he can't reach.  Then it's back to the "little" house to finish cleaning and ironing.  There is an Agricultural Society Fair at the Genesee Country Village and Museum on Octdober 4 and 5.  I would like to enter a child's sweater. We'll see if I can get it finished within the next couple of days. It's going to ge a busy weekend again and I don't think I'll have a lot of time until Monday and Tuesday.  It's a really cute pattern. The cardigan has an owl pattern knitted right into the bodice.  When I finish, I'll take a picture and post it on the Blog.
I'm into the second Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay and loving it.  Easy, fun read.  I walked down to my local library the other day to check out what else is new. The Donnelly House in Mumford houses our local library.  Our selection is actually pretty good for a small library, but I can get anything I want from any of the Monroe llibraries through my branch. I picked up John Saul's new release Face of Fear abd Kathy Reichs' Devil's Bones. That should keep me busy for a while.
     Later...

Monday, September 22, 2008 - Fall is in the air
Posted in Unspecified

Today is the first day of Autumn and time to start planning for winter.  I worked on my tinder box today.  I took the branches and twigs that I collected from the tree RJ cut up the other day and manged to create a large enough tinder box to get us started when the nip in the air turns to snow on the ground. Although we heat the Inn with oil and natural gas, the "little" house is heated with wood and natural gas as a backup.
I've started working in the basement of the Inn. There are boxes to be sorted, linens to be donated, and stuff to be thrown out that's been collecting dust.  So the curb saw my old computer monitor and a lot of empty boxes.  I gathered 2 garbage bags of towels and old sheets to take to the animal adoption agency tomorrow.  RJ put the second coat of paint on the exterior of the Inn today. There is just a little bit that I will have to do because he can't fit his hand between the fence rails to reach the clapboard. I should be able to get to that tomorrow.
I finished Darkly, Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsey.  What a wonderful story! I just loved it!  So of course, I immediately borrowed the second book in the series. So many books... so little time.
I have some errands to run tomorrow so I think that will be done after breakfast. Tonight I have the cutest couple ever staying with me.  They are celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary. I hope I will be as fortuante.

Yeah! I finally got a new laptop.  I bought an new Dell XSP with a new wireless printer. But the best ever is I took advantage of a special purchase of a Dell Mini 9.  How cool is that!  This XPS is the perfect size for me.  Lightweight with lots of memory.  I love it!  Now I will have no excuse for not writing.  I don't have to share the computer with RJ because I know have mine own.
RJ has been painting outside. The main portion of the Inn is solid stone with walls that are 2 1/2 feet thick. The second floor is stucco and the additions in the rear overlooking the pond is clapboard.  The clapboard is now a gorgeous shade of medium sage with white trim.  The stucco will be a medium gray and the doors a rich burgundy.  He just finished planting our fall mums in a variety of colors. Sadly, the cosmos are at the end of their season and it's time to cut them down and prepare the ground for the winter season. Tomorrow is already the first day of fall. I'm always surprised that the summer ends so quickly. Our upcoming fall season looks busy with guests visiting family, planning getaways, vacationing i the Rochester and Finger Lakes, or visiting the Genesee Country Village and Museum. There is so much to do in the area we surprise ourselves sometimes by taking advantage of some of the activities when we can get away.
I took a ride to the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard to visit the chapel and pick up my Monk's bread.  This is where the Trappists Monk's bake their breads and make their jams and jellies.  They bake fruit cakes, brownies, and decadent chocolate delights. The chapel is a very peaceful place and offers a time for reflection and prayer.  I try to get down there as much as possible.  It's a short drive, only 15 minutes, and wll worth it. Many of my guests who visit Geneseo or Letchworth State Park will make the side trip and when they return they are always pleased to have taken the time.  Living out in the country so close to nature, you can feel the wonder and awe all around. This morning during breakfast, my guests were enjoying good food, good conversation, and good companionship, when one of them looked out to see our ducks on the pond. Their tail feathers were up in the air as they groped under the surface for food.  In the evening, the native brown trout and native brook trout can be seen swimming through the crystal clear water and poking through the water to nip at insects flying too close to the surface.t
It's time to start getting our wood cut and split for the heating season.  RJ already cut up one tree and I started to gather kindling. This is will a job we will do over the next month. It'll take RJ a good couple of weekends to cut up what we already have down. Till later...

Monday, September 8, 2008 - Dexter and Toads
Posted in Slice of Life

I'm reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.  What a great story!  This is the book that was the inspiration for the Showtime series Dexter, which I might add, I thoroughly enjoyed. In fact, I even brokedown and bought the first and second season.  This show could almost make me sign up for Showtime. A lovable serial killer... what a great concept.  Jeff Lindsay has written 2 more books in the series. I'm anxious to get into them to see if the series and the books are similar.
So many books... so little time!
I've been thinking about my own stories. Stories about growing up in Buffalo and some of the dumb and not so dumb things I did. I suppose I should just start jotting them down before they are truly lost forever.  I remember my sister and me pulling a wagon to a vacant lot two doors down from our house in Cheektowaga.  There were weeds galore and tiny toads.  We would spend hours collecting toads and putting them in our Red Rider wagon with the black handle and rubber tires.  We would pull that foolish thing all over this lot as we picked up tiny baby toads and put them in the wagon.  With toads jumping out, Jo and I would walk back to our house with our treasure chest full of toads. What in the world we were going to do with a hundred toads is beyond me.  To this day, I can remember searching, catching, and collecting these little guys only to have to return them to the fields because my mother did not want them in the garage.  So I would pull the wagon back to the field and release whatever toads had not already jumped out and then return home. Oh, to be 8 again and have all the time in the world to collect toads.

Saturday, September 6, 2008 - The End of the Story
Posted in Slice of Life

It was getting very late and I knew I had 14 people for breakfast the next morning. Well, actually it was already that morning.  I decided to take Cooper with me one last time in hopes of finding Bentley.  Cooper was pulling as we traveled deep into the woods behind our house. I called. Still no answer. Cooper headed down another path. He had found the path that led to our neighborhood's yard.  I started down the path with Cooper pulling when he suddenly stopped and looked.
"What do you see, Coop?" I asked.
" Bentley, are you out there?" I heard jingling in the underbrush.  It sounded just like Bentley's jewelry.  "Bentley, is that you?" I asked again.
Out from behind a tree, I saw his big grey and black head looking right at me with the biggest eyes ever. "Come here, boy," I coaxed.  Out he comes, head down, wagging his tail. He went right to Cooper, sniffing and nuzzling him. Then he came right up to me and put his head down, looking for a hug. "You big old bear! Where have you been? I've been worried sick."  I clipped his collar and started to walk back to the little house.
      The relief was unbelievable.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - Mid-Week Musings
Posted in Slice of Life

My editor is looking for my story. I spend a lot of time just thinking about what I am going to write about.  Now I'm on a deadline. Ugh! I prefer this piece to be behind me.   I will finish tomorrow and press "send." With that assignment finished, I will work on my book. My co-editor needs information so we can move towards publication. I have so many pieces to write, all for different purposes.
I still haven't figured out the writer's space thing.  I tried writing at the dining room table.  The space is not conducive to writing. The height of the table is good. The lighting is fine.  But the space is not mine.  It is a temporary place to work until I can find a more permanent spot.  I will be much more productive when I can finally make a space my own.
Tomorrow is a bake day. I've already made the dough for 12 dozen chocolate chip cookies.  Banana Bread, Cranberry Nut Bread, and Berry English Muffin Bread are all on the agenda for tomorrow afternoon.  I have guests this evening, so I'll need to clean rooms tomorrow morning before I bake. Then I will have time to finish some of the writing I'm working on.
Over the weekend, the Genesee Country Village and Museum had their Fireworks Extravaganza.  Some of my guests attended.  I remained behind and was working at the Inn getting ready for Sunday since I had close to a full house. I really was paying much attention to the fireworks display when I suddenly remembered I had left Cooper and Bentley outside.  I looked out the window and saw Cooper sitting on the porch next to the side door, but Bentley was no where to be found.  I ran down to the little house, calling his name, but it was apparent he had taken off.  I called... and called again with no luck. I couldn't image where he went since he had on his collar on for the Invisible Fence.  I figured he was so spooked, he broke through and darted off into the woods behind our house.  Those six acres never seemed so big. It was starting to get dark and still Bentley had no returned.  I had even taken the car out to cruise the next street in hopes that he may have gone through our property and onto our neighbors. Unfortunately he wasn't there.
To be continued tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - I've Been Thinking...
Posted in Slice of Life

I stare at the blank page and have no idea where my words will take me.  I discover that I have a lot to say but no time to translate that to paper.  I wonder when would be a good time to write. I need a space. Someplace where I can go to explore my thoughts and record my words. I've tried the office desk. It is too cluttered with "work." My bedroom has no writing space.  The Dining Room has a large table. I can see the mill pond through the sliding glass door, but the space is rather open and not conducive to writing. The Living Room is not set up for work. The stove is a focal point with the entertainment center dominating one wall.  That leaves the burgundy leather couch and loveseat to fill the center space. Once again no place to write.  The kitchen table faces the front of the house and the woods... that space doesn't work either. So my dilemma continues.
A writer's studio... or at least a writer's space.  I think tomorrow I'll set up on the dining room table and see what I can accomplish... if anything.  I need to write... to remember. There is so much I am afraid I will forget if I don't write it down.

Stories.  Have you read The Mermaid's Chair? It's well worth the read. It's a story about traveling inside. I think that's what writing does for me. It lets me travel within.   I think I need to travel more.

Friday, July 18, 2008 - Playing the Lottery
Posted in Slice of Life

I went to Wegman's Supermarket yesterday to pick up a few items for the weekend. With a full house, supplies can run short around here pretty quickly.  I was picking out some fresh fruit for a basket I was putting together and I selected a Chicago Cutlery paring knife. It was a gorgeous knife with a black handle for only 6.99. I rarely look over my receipt in the store. I usually wait until I get home to find out if there an error. But for some reason, I decided to check it before I left the store.  Well, wouldn't you know it, there was on overcharge on my paring knife.  So back in the store I go straight to customer service.
"May I help you?" the gal behind the counter asks.
"Yes, thank you, I think I may have made a mistake, but I thought the knife I bought was 6.99 and I was charged $7.99," I reply.
"Do you have your receipt and the knife?" she asks.
"Yes," I say, as I hand the receipt over to her and begin searching the bag for the knife.
As I hand it over to her, she says, "Just a minute, I'll be right back," and off she goes to, I suppose, check on the sign I said I saw.
She is gone for a while. Two other associates ask if I need help. I say, "No , thank you. I'm being taken care of."
Finally the gal returns and goes immediately to her register.  "Was I mistaken?" I ask.
"No, you are correct," she responds.
She puts $2 and change on the counter.  I pick it up. Now I can do math and $6.99 from $7.99 is not $2.00 and change. I'm standing at the counter and the gal is already onto another task. "Excuse me, I think you made a mistake."
The gal looks on the change. "No, that's right. It's the difference in price plus $1 for the scanning error.
     "Wow!" I say. "Found money!"
The gal laughs. I look up and see a sign for the New York State Mega Millions. The pot is up to $105 million. The sign next to it is for the New York State Lotto. That pot is up to $15 million. "How do I play that and how much does it cost?" I ask.
Another girl on another register comes over to talk to me.  "It's a dollar," she says.
     "For each one?" I ask.
     "Yep."
A younger girl joins us. "I don't play," she says. "I need instant gratification so I only plan the scratch offs."
All this talk is making my head spin. I don't gamble and I don't play the lottery.  "So how do I do this?" I ask.
"We can sell you tickets right here," the other girl says.
I slip my $2 back onto the counter and the girl takes it and begins punching buttons on the machine. The lottery machine, I guess.  Out pops a ticket. On it is says NY Mega Millions. $105 million!  That sounds very inviting.  The younger girl is punching buttons on her machine and out pops a similar ticket. But this one says NY State Lotto, $15 million. I look at the tickets.  "Oh my God!" I say. All three girls look at me. "Oh my God! I say again. "Will you look at this?" I show the girls the tickets. "Tomorrow is my birthday and the drawing is tomorrow! And look at this one. It has my birthdate in the numbers."
The girls are smiling. I'm sure they heard this one before. The gal says, "We'll be able to say we knew her when..."
I laugh, "You never know."  I leave the store smiling.
When I get home, I tell RJ all about my escapade in Wegman's with the girls and buying lottery tickets.
"You bought lottery tickets? I don't believe it," he says.
I show him the tickets. "See?" I say.
"You never buy lottery tickets," he reminds me.
     "I know," I say. "But it;s $105 million."
He laughs. "That's exactly why people buy lottery tickets. They plan what they are going to do when they win all this money."
"You watch," I say. "I could win. Someone has got to."

Today NY State lottery was drawn. I look online for the post. I call out to RJ, "I guess I won't be quitting my day job."
     He laughs.

Thursday, July 17, 2008 - Cookies
Posted in Unspecified

Last weekend for the Midsummer Festival at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. We were invited to join in the festivities and provide cookies for the visitors.
     "How many?" I ask.
"About 1000 should do it," Shaunta says.
1000! I say to myself. I'll be baking until the cows come home!  "Okay," I say. "I'm in." I must be out of my mind. A 1000 cookies will take me a couple of days at least!
Two days  and 1000 cookies later, I am at the Art Gallery in the Museum dressed in my Civil War garb passing out recipes and talking to hundreds of people.  The temperatures are in the 90s, but fortunately, the gallery is air conditioned and I'm enjoying the cool air. Pictures of the Genesee Country Inn are on the backdrop.  It is a long evening, but wonderful. My feet hurt from all the standing and my throat is dry from all the talking. Here is the recipe for my Shaved Chocolate Cookies:

Shaved Chocolate Cookies

                                    Ingredients

                                    3 cups all-purpose flour

                                    1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup light brown sugar, packed

                                    1 cup butter

                                    2 eggs

                                    1 teaspoon baking soda

                                    ½ teaspoon salt

                                    2 teaspoons real vanilla

                                    1 cup shaved semi-sweet chocolate

Preheat oven to 375º F. Cream butter and sugars until smooth. Add eggs, vanilla, baking soda, and salt. Beat until smooth. Add flour. Stir in shaved chocolate. Drop by teaspoonful on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on rack. Store in an airtight container.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - I've Missed the Words
Posted in Life at the Inn

It's been weeks since I've written a word. The Inn has been very busy... very busy. I had a full house last weekend and I have a full house this weekend. That's a lot of people in the Inn. Last week was the Midsummer Festival at the Genesee Country Village and Museum. I baked over 700 cookies from the event and talked to about 400 people about the Inn. I gave everyone, who would want one, a copy ofay Shaved Chocolate Cookies and a discount coupon for a stay at the Genesee Country Inn. I've been thinking about writing a cookbook with stories about the recipes. I've already published two short stories. I think this could be fun for the Inn to have it's own cookbook.  I use many of my family's recipes and love to share them with my guests.
Writing for  me has always been a way for me to explore my thoughts. A friend of mine said that writing was "the inking of our thinking." That makes so much sense to me. Sometimes I'll write and it goes somewhere where I've least expect it. One thought leads to another and "surprise!" there it is... out there... somewhere. I think that's why writing is so enjoyable. It gives me time to think about things and to discover how I really feel about it.  Sometimes I reach an "ah ha" moment and say, "Wow! That's really good." Other times, I finish a piece and say, "You've got to be kidding. There is no way possible that I wrote that." It feels like a line from the movie Secret Garden when Johnny Deep says, "No bad writing" and proceeds to delete the sentences that he just wrote on his computer. I, on the other hand, keep it try to salvage it, usually unsuccessfully.
I have a column now in a local magazine. I write about being an innkeeper and what this lifestyle is all about. But I'm a storyteller. I just want to tell stories.
I attended a meeting today with a group of other B&B owners. We discussed marketing issues for our businesses and creating this wonderful friendship. We have so much knowledge between the group of us and these meeting provide opportunities for us to discuss our business and share our ideas with each other. Collective, we are now one voice and a great support network.  Reen from An Inn at Reen's provided a delightful lunch of roasted turkey with cranberry and lettuce on a rolls with potato salad and cole slaw. Eileen from Springdale Farm Bed and Breakfast brought dessert of angel food cake with a light orange frosting with blueberries. Glorious!
Tomorrow I need to go shopping for a bit in the morning to pick up flowers a guest and items for a basket that I am creating to celebrate an anniversay for another guest. This should be fun. Friday will be the start of a very busy weekend. I'll need to start making more time to write. I have the ideas. I need to make more time to work. Time for everything and everything in its time.  See you tomorrow. d

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 - Killer Cat
Posted in Personal Musings

Cooper lay at my feet, licking his furry paws.

     “Cooper, stop licking!” I scold.

     Slurp! Slurp! Slurp!

     “Cooper, I said stop it!”

     Slurp! Slurp! Slurp!

“What are you doing?” I say as I look down at my feet and Cooper.

     Slurp! Slurp! Slurp!

Cooper is now licking the floor. His long pink tongue laps at the hardwood floor.

“Cooper, what are you licking?” I push his head away to see what has his interest.  There under his paws and under his nose are scales. Fish scales. Scales from the little tetra that Sam the Killer Cat had impaled with his claws and devoured for a snack the day before. “Awe, Cooper,” I whine.

I get up and go to the kitchen sink to obtain a wet sponge. I wipe up the scales that are dried and spread over a small area of the hardwood floor. I look to the left to see another patch of fish scales. There can be no mistaken. Sam had enjoyed the tetra and left remnants – scales – a little reminder of what was left of the fish.

I wipe up the other small patch of scales. “All gone, Cooper.” Yes, the little tetra is just that – all gone.

Monday, June 16, 2008 - Where's the fish?
Posted in Unspecified

I have an aquarium. It's a nice 29 gallon tank that sits in my kitchen area. I planned a community tank with social fish, nothing aggressive. As time has progressed, my little fish have become big fish, but still pretty social.  I have a Plecostomus, a rainbow shark, an iridescent shark, an African frog, a couple of small algae eaters and two tetras, an orange and a silver with black.
The other day as I was peering into the tank, I noticed my little tetra was being pursued by the rainbow shark. Now the rainbow has a couple inches on the little guy, but the tetra has a bit of speed. He swam to the corner and hid behind the heater. He then shot to the other side and hid behind the filter. But it didn’t end there. He shot across the tank and then hid under the greenery.  The shark was on his tail, nipping a piece, shredding the fin. Poor little guy! Someone needed a time out!
I grabbed my net and attempted to scoop out the rainbow shark. If I did that, I wasn’t sure if the one gallon tank would hold the shark. My bigger fear was the shark would jump out of the tank, so I scooped the tetra instead and placed him carefully into the little tank.  The little guy scooted from corner to corner looking for a place to hide. The small fake plant in the center of the tank did little to provide coverage.  As the tetra swam around, his frantic movements became more fluid and less anxious. Oh my gosh! He was alone in the tank. No shark! He swam from side to side, obviously happy.
Meanwhile in the other tank, the rainbow shark swam lazily throughout the tank looking for the little guy. Oh well. Little did he know, the tetra was swimming happily in the one gallon tank without the stress of pursuit.
Before I turned in for the night, I checked the tanks, turned off the lights, and went to bed.
I the morning, I turned on the lights, checked the tank, and fed the fish. Everyone looked happy. I picked up RJ after he drove in from Wisconsin and told him about the tetra and shark incident and how I have saved the little guy from the big bad shark. He laughed.
When we got home, he walked over to the little tank and asked, “Where’s the fish?”
     “In the tank,” I said.
     “No it’s not.”
     “Yes, it is.”
     “No… it’s not.”
I peered into the tank. No fish. There was Sam, my cat, sitting on the floor, licking his lips, and meowing with a smile on his face. I had saved my tetra from the big bad shark to become Sam’s lunch. Agh! I guess I can’t change destiny.

Friday, June 6, 2008 - Herbs, work, and JC
Posted in Life at the Inn

I have been so busy since RJ left on another excursion. Between guests, gardening, baking, cleaning, my time has been at a premium.  This morning, 2 of my guests asked if they could walk Bentley and Cooper.  What a godsend!  The boys really enjoyed walking in the MacKay Nature Reserve. I managed to finish planting today. All the pots are out and filled with the most gorgeous colors. Even my herb garden is taking off.  You would not believe my mint! I have it growing next to the fountain. It's already 2 feet high and full of big, beautiful leaves and flavorful. The scent is full and strong.  The leaves will be fabulous in ice tea!  My chives are florishing! It looks like it will be a great season for herbs.
I picked up a couple of good movies: 28 Weeks Later, Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber, and Cloverfield. What a nice selection of movies: a zombie flick, horror musical, and a creature feature. God, I love the genre! I just finished "The Gingerbread Girl" by Stephen King. Good story! I really think his recent work is so good. I loved Duma Key. So many books - so little time.
I hope the weather holds for tomorrow. I would like to finish the flower beds and finish weeding the front of the Inn. It takes so long since we have quite a lot of property to maintain.  It is so much easier when RJ is around.
On an aside, I would like to acknowledge my brother-in-law, JC. He called to tell me I never mention him in my blog except to call him my brother-in-law. So hence forth, I will refer to my brother-in-law as JC and he will not have "a bone to pick with me" anymore.  So JC, this is for you...  Good night, all. See you tomorrow.

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - Away too long...
Posted in Life at the Inn

I cannot believe that I haven't written in such a long time. The days really slip away at the Inn when season hits. My next day off is June 11, and with a little bit of luck, that day will go away and it won't be until the end of the month that I have a day. Actually that's really okay. It's back to the old  adage "Make hay while the sun shines!"
We have been busy with guests, meetings, and work around the Inn. I've managed to finish 3 of the flower beds, which will leave 2 more. And that's just the garden in front of the gazebo.  I still have the garden next to the McGinnis Room and the fountain to tend.  RJ got the pump working today, Yea! $400 later, the fountain is shooting 20 feet into the air. It is so high now that it can be seen by the rooms on the second floor.  I managed to get to Buffalo visit Aunt Arlene. She is having some work done on her house and invited me over as the house was being inspected. All went well and she is moving on to the next project. (Gee, sounds like me... one project after another!)
I went out with RJ and friends to see Ironman. It is definitely worth seeing. Robert Downing, Jr. was great, the story line was interesting, and the diaglogue well done.  Then I watched Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp. I really like him as an actor and he did not disappoint me in this one either. He is not a professional singer, but did a remarkable job in this musical. It certainly didn't hurt that I liked the story. It's based on The Barber of Serville.  Good job, Johnny.
We had a dinner meeting here this week. Those are tough days. I go all morning with breakfast and rooms to turn around and get back into the kitchen for dinner. Unfortunately, on that day I needed to pick up supplies, too, because of the holiday. It just got to be a long, crazy day. I crashed big time and got up early to take care of my guests who were leaving early. Tomorrow will be another early morning. My guests are all businessmen and need to out by 7:00 AM and we have more guests checking-in tomorrow afternoon. I have another meeting tomorrow so RJ will be left behind to check everyone in.
Ah, and so the saga of the Innkeeper goes on. Now if I could add a little more time to my days, I think I might be able to keep up with my life.
