6/17/2009 - DUMB AS A ROCK Psalms 135:15-18
Reference: Psalm 135:15-18 The idols of the nations are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. 16 They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. 17 They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. 18 And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.
Observation: The simple truth? You become like what you worship. Our nation is enamored with vacuous celebrities. It is not surprising, then, that we are, as a nation, superficial and image obsessed. We worship at the altar of pleasure and, as a consequence, we are short term oriented and lacking in self control. We worship money and are surprised that people become commodities, each one of us with a price sticker indicating our value.
Application/Confession: I am tempted with making knowledge an idol. Thinking that if I just know more and more I will be able to control life and make it dance to my tune. But knowledge has no heart and my worship of what I can know threatens to shrink my heart for God and people.
PRAYER: Challenge me Lord to worship only You. As I look ahead, on this, my birthday, to this next year, I desire to love You and love people as much as You love them and never let my love of knowledge get in the way of that. |
