He IS Heavy, He's My Fool
REFERENCE: Proverbs 27:3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, but the resentment caused by a fool is even heavier.
Observation: Resentment is what happens when we harbor unforgiveness in our hearts. It's hard sometimes to forgive. The hurt and pain that another person has caused is still so real and present and raw. What this verse challenges us to remember is that resentment is a terrible thing to have to carry. It is heavy. It wears us down and wears us out. It does nothing to "them" (the person that has hurt us) but it does a great deal, negatively, to our well being. Take note of what this verse suggests: most of the time the person who hurt us is a fool. Foolish people are going to act foolishly and if we are in their circle of relationships, we might just get hurt by it. Still, it should come as no surprize that the fool is acting foolishly--again!! Instead of getting mad and resentful we should simply be looking for ways to insulate ourselves from their foolish choices. We can't control the fools in our lives but we can control how much of our lives fools can effect.
Application/Confession: I really struggled for many months to forgive some foolish people who were in my life and messed it up. I had to learn to let God deal with their consequences and discipline--it is simply not my job and I can not bear up under the weight of resentment. It takes toooo much emotional energy. PRAYER: Help me to see the fools early. Help me to love them but not to give them the chance to mess up my life. Help me, always, to extend forgiveness whenever I am hurt by someone and let go of the resentment that will weigh me down.
