11/16/2009 - What Are You Gonna Trust? Hebrews 13:5-6
Posted in Unspecified

What Are You Gonna Trust?

REFERENCE:  Heb. 13:5-6 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” 6 So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

OBSERVATION:  Why do we have such a love for money and always want more of it and stuff? Because we have drank the kool-aid and come to believe that financial security and material possessions will insulate us from harm. The Spirit of Materialism says to us: "no matter what you face, I will be here to make it OK."
There are two things we need to realize about that:
1) It is a lie. As so many have come to realize the hard way during the current recession, we simply can not count on money to be there for us and to provide for our deepest personal needs. We may lose our job. We may lose our home. Money does not equate with security.
2) Materialism is a false idol. We are tempted to give to it the worship and trust that only God deserves.
God, alone, promises: "I will never fail you, I will never abondon you." We are too much and too often captured by what people think of us. We use our cars, our clothes, and our homes to try to "buy" a positive image in other's eyes. It never works for long. However, with God on our side, we can get toff he treadmill of other's opinion and decide to live for an audience of one. We can, and should, decide that it is His opinion alone that matters.
This is the only healthy and peaceful way to live.

APPLICATION/CONFESSION:
My idol is success. Too often I feel beat down and beat up because I am not as successful as I want to be, think I should be, or as the next pastor I am comparing myself to. I want so much to get off of that scale and learn to simply live being happy to be God's obedient servant.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, I gave my life to You a long time ago. Forgive me for allowing anything or anyone to define my worth besides You. You have promised to never leave me or forsake me. My heart needs to remember that so that I can say: "What does it matter what people do to me, how they respond to me or don't respond?" If You Lord are for me, what else matters? I want to be free from fear and I need Your help.
