The "True" Truth
REFERENCE: James 3:17-18 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
OBSERVATION: How often do we hear people present God's (supposed) truth in a manner that is anything but peace loving and gentle--especially when it is presented in the midst of a conflict. How do we know if some piece of wisdom is really from God? Well, of course, first of all, does it conform to scripture. God is not schizophrenic; if He said one thing at one time in His Word, He will not contridict it through a "prophet". But beyond that, the hallmark of truth that comes from God is that encourages peace, gentleness and unity among people. We Christians are guilty, so often, of presenting Truth in a way that alienates people and shows no mercy. James says that God's truth is full of good works--we would be wise to remember that. We should always present truth in the context of practical help. For example, I believe that the scripture is clear that abortion is not right, that God is pro-life. However, presenting that "truth" in a way that simply brings argument and fighting, that uses "truth" as a weapon, doesn't do any good. If, on the other hand, it is presented in the context of mercy and understanding for the very real and difficult life choices some women have to make around this issue, if we are willing to not just condemn abortion but to step in an offer help and an alternative, then God's true wisdom is being presented. Next time we hear "Truth" being put forth in a way that is unmerciful, pugnacious, and self-satisfisfied, (and too often this kind of presentation is celebrated rather than condemned in Christian circles) perhaps we should look elsewhere to discover what God is really saying.
APPLICATION/CONFESSION: I look back now in my life and realize how often I have been more concerned about my sense of being "right" than I was about being merciful and loving. I am so sorry. I see now the great damage such an approach brings. I wish I could do it all over again. PRAYER: Forgive me Lord for ever presenting Your Truth in my own pugnacious, self-centered way. Help me to always have Your heart for others as well as Your Truth. Please redeem the damage that I have caused in other's souls.
