The True Heart Of An Intercessor
REFERENCE: Gen. 18:23-25 Abraham approached him and said, "Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked? 24 Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city; will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes? 25 Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?"
Observation: Even though the people of Sodom were extremely wicked and even Abraham was disgusted by them and refused to live near them, he was still driven to intercede for them even though he had to put himself at risk of God's anger. That is the true heart of an intecessor.
Application/Confession: I need to have a heart like this for my city. It is easy to look at the sin and indifference and forget that they are people, just like me, who need a savior and need someone to intercede on their behalf.
PRAYER: Lord, teach me to have a heart for this community in which I serve and for the whole of Portland. I know you love these people and I want to be as passionate as Abraham was in prayer for my city. Please give me the grace to pray like he did.
