1/28/2008 - A Slave No More Exodus 6:6-9

A Slave No More

SCRIPTURE: Exo. 6:6-9 “Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt. 8 I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the Lord!’”

9 So Moses told the people of Israel what the Lord had said, but they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery.

OBSERVATION: Too many Christians have become so "discouraged by the brutality of their slavery" to sin that they have lost the hope, as the people of Israel did, that they could be free drom their oppression and slavery. Habitual sin has a way of sapping our hope, making us slaves that have no anticipation of every being free.

Notice here: God reminded them of who they were, what He had promised them and who He is ("I am the Lord").

As enslaved Christians, we need to remember the same things.

Who are we? Children of God, free in Christ. Sin has no right to bind us anymore.

What has God promised us? "There is no temptation taken you which is not common to man and God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond that which you are able but will, with the temptation, provide a way of escape."

Who is He? Jesus quoted Isaiah refering to Jesus saying that He came to "set the captive free".

Don't give up, don't settle for slavery. Don't get discouraged--you can be free!

APPLICATION/CONFESSION: Sometimes I feel like I will never overcome my flesh. That these areas I get tripped up in will always have a hold on me. I see here that this very mindset is a strategy of Satan's to keep me from ever getting free. I refuse to belive it. I choose freedom.

PRAYER: Thank you that I am your child, set free in Jesus. Thank you that there is no temptation I face that I can not overcome by your grace and thank you that you are a freeer of captives. Set me free. Give me the grace to live free.
