The Commandment Most Broken

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 20:3-4 “You must not have any other god but me. 4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods."
OBSERVATION: It seems that the first commandment is the one most broken as well. As humans we are always finding something to worship, give ultimate value to and look to believing that it will meet our needs. In a media saturated culture we have images everywhere and, as much we look back on the ancient cultures and wonder how they could ever worship a man made idol, we do the same thing with the images in our culture. Pornography is nothing less than image worship. People worship movie stars and yet have never seen anything except their images in film, TV and pictures.

We make idols of money and materal things--things that people have made.
APPLICATION/CONFESSION: I must do as Proverbs says and, "keep my heart with all diligence". There is so much in this material world that would like to steal away my attention and affection and I have to be very aware of Satan's schemes to draw me away. I am very media oriented and while enjoying wholesome entertainment, I can not give into the tempation to let anything I see take God's place of central devotion in my heart.
PRAYER: It is wonderful to know that you, God, are jealous of my affection toward you. Why would you want me that much? Help me to keep you first in my heart, my affection and my obedience.
