Stop Trying to Change the Unchangeable

SCRIPTURE: Prov. 9:8 So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.

OBSERVATION: How many verbal fights do we get in because we are trying to correct a mocker? A mocker is someone with no interest in changing their actions or ways of thinking. They are someone who is convinced that their way is right and that there is no reason to listen to anyone else.

When we discover that the person is a mocker, that they really don't want to change, then we should give up trying to convince them of anything--you will only get hatred in return and it won't do any good.

On the other hand, our tendency with the wise is to let them go their own way. We think that they will figure it out on their own soon enough, they don't need our input. The truth is, these are the people who we can lovingly correct and they will thank us for it!! The wise want to be wiser and we can help them.

It's a good idea to ask ourselves; are we mockers, unopen to correction and change, or are we wise, lovingly accepting correction and appreciative of the people from whom it comes.

OBSERVATION/CONFESSION: I must admit that there have been more than one occasion when I have fought with mockers, convinced, wrongly, in my ability to make them see the light. The interaction certainly generated more heat than light and I would be wise to remember that.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the discernment to know a mocker when they come around. Save me from my own ego that would think that I alone can convince them to see the light.
