But God, They Really Hurt Me!
Reference: Leviticus 19:17 “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.” OBSERVATION: We only have two choices when it comes to hard feelings that we have towards another person. As was mentioned a few days ago, we can forgive and, completely let go of what they have done. We can not nurse it, discuss it or encourage it. Sometimes competely letting go is the best approach. On the other hand it is sometimes necessary to confront people directly. In fact, here we are warned that if we don’t, we participate in their sin. Few people like confrontation. Many books on leadership make it clear that even the heads of powerful corporations who make hard decisions every day, hate to have to personally confront people. None of us like rejection and that is just what we risk when we take a chance to tell someone what we think they are doing wrong. Still, there are situations in which we must be willing to do it. There are times when we are the only person who our friend will listen to and whose advice they will heed. If we won’t confront them no one will and that could be disaster for them, their family and their life.
APPLICATION/CONFESSION: There are those in my life that I know I am not called to confront. I don’t have the relationship and they would never hear what I have to say. I need to do what the first part of this verse says; I need to not nurse hatred towards them. When I think of them and find it rising up in my heart, I need to discipline myself to give it over to God. It makes little difference in their lives if I to nurse my hard feelings, but it certainly is bad for me--and I am told not to do it.
PRAYER: Lord forgive me for nursing hatred towards anyone. I want to forgive like You do. Please give me the grace to do it.
