Fear and Rebellion

REFERENCE: Do not rebel against the LORD, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the LORD is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!

OBSERVATION: Fear of man can be rebellion against God. Like the Israelites, we may face laying hold of the promises that God has given us but find ourselves reacting in fear instead of faith. At that moment it may not seem like there are any moral issues involved, simply a decision not to do what makes us fearful.The truth is that when God has asked us to act and when we disobey because we fear what people may do, we are acting in rebellion against God. We have forgotten that God is with us and we have no reason to be afraid. But still God sees this cowardliness as rebellion. We must learn to fear Him more than we fear people.

APPLICATION/CONFESSION: How many times have I held back and not confronted someone or not taken some action because I was afraid of a person? It was rebellion and I need to remember that the next time I am faced with a choice of fear or faith.

PRAYER: I am learning, Lord, to walk daily under the guidance of Your Holy Spirit. I know there will be times when Your Spirit asks me to act, to speak, to move and I will be afraid of what how a person will react. Remind me in those moments that test my faith that to respond to my fear is to rebel against You.
