3/17/2010 - Co-Signing Trap Proverbs 11:15
Co-Signing Trap Reference: Proverbs 11:15 There’s danger in putting up security for a stranger’s debt; it’s safer not to guarantee another person’s debt. Observation: Here is what it comes down to; don’t co-sign for another’s debt. Talk about practical, this couldn’t be more. There is usually a reason people need a co-signer and, for most of us, it is hard enough to keep our own financial house in order and we don’t need to take on the responsibility to make sure someone else lives up to their obligations. God’s way is not co-signing or lending, it is to be willing to give to those who need it. When we give, we free ourselves from the anxiety of worrying about whether it is going to be paid back. We’re free, so is the borrower and that is what God wants. If we can’t afford to give, then we can’t afford to lend or co-sign because the Word tells us to consider a loan as a gift so that it won’t become a source of stress and worry in our lives. Application/Confession: I am reminded of my obligation to give to the poor. I do pretty well but I really want to eliminate all debt from my life so that I am freer to bless those who need help. When I think of all I pay in debt service, what a joy to be able to give all of that to people who really need help or those God simply wants to bless.
