3/18/2010 - Lead, will Ya? Numbers 27:17
Lead, will Ya? REFERENCE: Numbers 27:17 Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the Lord will not be like sheep without a shepherd. OBSERVATION: What are spiritual leaders supposed to do? Our job is to lead in two ways; to lead those we responsible for in the spiritual directions that God wants them to go in and to lead them into battle. The truth is that we will never be successful in the first if we don’t fully engage in the latter. Sometimes, we as leaders draw back from both of these responsibilities. We are afraid to lead others “wherever they (should) go” because we are afraid of the tendency of this generation to reject anyone who is brave enough to say, “go this way!!” They seem to want to hear, “maybe you should think about this, possibly” or “make up your own mind”. To set a firm direction sets the leader up for criticism and possible rebellion. Because of that, many spiritual leaders simply do not lead. We should do it with love, we should do it with humility, but we must lead; it is the call God has given us. We are equally reticent to call people into battle. We are afraid to sound like demon hunting maniacs if we talk about spiritual warfare too much. The truth is, we are in a battle. The churches and people we lead are in a battle. The question is, will we lead them into fighting it or get beat up without a fight? A good spiritual leader will not let that happen. APPLICATION/CONFESSION: I need to recognize the reality of the spiritual warfare around me and fight more. I know that God has called me into battle but I also know that I don’t answer the call as often as I should and I don’t call others into war like I ought to.
