3/20/2010 - What He Came To Do Luke 4:18

What He Came To Do
Reference: Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come."

Observation: As Jesus starts His ministry, God gives Him a chance, by providing the opportunity of the public reading of these verses, to tell the world what His mission, the purpose of His ministry, will be. This passage from Isaiah 61 not only encapsulates the calling of Jesus, but ours as well. We are to do what He did. The Spirit that was on Him is in us and motivating us to follow His example.
What did He do, what are we supposed to do?
  • Preach Good News; let people know that they can be saved
  • Let those in captivity to sin and addictions know that they can be free from what enslaves them.
  • Turn on the lights for those in spiritual darkness; to show them what truth and reality is.
  • Let those who are being oppressed by the evil one be set free by the power of God.
  • Tell everyone that the day of God’s favor has come; that God is not against them any longer but wants to know them and come close to them because of what Jesus has done.

We can see from this list that the message of salvation is not just eternal life, but life for every part of man. It is the cure for all that ails the human race, and we are called to proclaim it.

Application/Confession:
I’m pretty good at telling Christians the Good News. God is really working on me to be ready to tell the Good News to those who don’t know it but need it. That is a lot more challenging to me.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for Your full-faceted salvation. Please give me the boldness and the passion to make all of it available to everyone who needs it.
