3/26/2010 - Remember The Sabbath! Deuteronomy 5:12
Remember the sabbath!! Reference: Deuteronomy 5:12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God." Observation: This is one commandment that many, many Christians have written off as not applicable to them. Even we pastors are really bad at taking a Sabbath for rest (in fact, we may be the worst offenders). We all need to see that if we don’t take a day off our bodies will take the time off for us. When it happens on an unplanned basis, it will take longer, create greater problems and be harder to recover from. Even though this is a commandment from the Old Testament, it is still something we need to observe today. As Jesus said, it is not that the we were made for the Sabbath; that is, we should observe it as a ritual without purpose or meaning. Instead, the Sabbath was made for us so that we can have a chance to recover, stay strong and continue to do all God has given us to do. Application/Confession: Just coming off a period of time when I worked 13 days straight, I can’t say that I have this Sabbath thing down pat. I’m working on it and I know that my life, strength and health is better when I live by the Sabbath principle. PRAYER: Thank you LORD that You care enough about me to create a system of having a day off. I need it and I thank You for giving it to me. May I receive it as the gift You planned for it to be and be a good steward of my time and body. |
