The Greatest Thing In Heaven or Earth
Reference: Psalms 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. 26 My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
Observation: This follows David’s lament that the unrighteous seem to be getting all the breaks--that there is no reason to follow God, no reward. In the end, though, David realizes that personally knowing the God of all the universe is worth far, far more than anything in this earth. It is worth suffering. It is worth doing without. He is the only thing in heaven or earth that really makes life worth living.
Application/Confession: Sometimes I feel like David earlier in this chapter; "God I have given you everything and look how meager the rewards are." Yet, with him, I have to say that knowing God personally is worth more than anything I could ever give up or not receive. If all I ever have is Him, and nothing from this world, then it has been a life well invested.
PRAYER: Since being with you is the greatest joy in my life, teach me to prioritize being with you even above serving you. You have given me the greatest privilege in the universe, teach me to value it as dearly as it deserves.
