Distracted by "The Details"
Reference: Luke 10:41 But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her."
Observation: For most of us our lives are consumed with "all these details". Here Martha was not simply going about her normal life, she was serving the Master, Christ. Yet, in the midst of her service Jesus tells her that her sister had chosen the better path. What it ought to suggest to all of us is that God wants our face more than our hands. He wants our personal devotion even more than our service.
It is so easy for the stuff of this life to totally consume us; even doing good things, even doing things for Him. But we need to hear His voice calling us to come and sit with Him, to simply be with Him a while. It is a very important lesson, generally, in how to prioritize our lives and to put limits on the "details" we so often give our lives over to.
Application/Confession: I, usually, find time to spend with Jesus. Instead of an afterthought it needs to be my first priority every day. Simply being with Him is more important than anything else my life is about.
PRAYER: Lord, teach me to be more like Martha. My heart wants to run to do. I feel so much better about getting things done than being with you. Still, I know what your priority is and I ask you for the grace to help me make your priorities mine.
