What We Really Deserve: Hell

Reference:
Luke 17:7-10 "When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, 'Come in and eat with me’? 8 No, he says, 'Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ 9 And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. 10 In the same way, when you obey me you should say, 'We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’

Observation: This scripture so flies in the face or our "I deserve it" culture. From commercials to our friends we are always being told that we deserve the best, we deserve special things, we deserve to be treated with deference and respect. God’s Word tells us that we deserve to spend eternity in hell for our sin. This passage makes it clear that even when we serve God with all our hearts, we still have only done our duty and "deserve" no special consideration.
This is not to make us feel like God is an uncaring, unconcerned taskmaster. Instead, it highlights how great God’s grace is because His blessing is totally undeserved on our part. We need to see that He is under no obligation to bless us--but He wants to and that is a wonderful reflection of His love.

Application/Confession:
I sometimes get that attitude; "God ought to bless me. Look at all I have done for Him. It’s time for some give back."

How wrong that is and how much I need to simply revel in His grace and love for me that He would do anything good for me.

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for all Your blessings. Forgive me for thinking that somehow I have even begun to earn them. Your grace is wonderful and I am so thankful for it.
