    4/19/2008 - Some Valuable Advice Proverbs 13:13-14

    Some Valuable Advice

Reference: Proverbs 13:13-14 People who despise advice are asking for trouble; . . . 14 The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death

Observation: We live in a world that values self-reliance almost above everything. We are tempted to believe that we don’t need advice, that in fact, we are wimpy, may even appear incompetent if we ask for it. The truth is, the smartest people around, those who others look to for insight and leadership are often the first to ask for other’s insight.

I was at lunch with the president of a rather large organization, a man well respected in the community, several months ago. I was there to ask advice because I knew how wise and able he was. As we were eating he received a call from his coach giving him an answer to a question he had posed to her. I decided there and then if someone as bright and capable as my friend needs advice, then I certainly do.

Application/Confession: The real issue is not whether we need it but, rather, can our ego receive it. It is especially hard when I feel like I’m right, that I have the problem all figured out and then someone advises me to the contrary. That is probably when I need input the most but tend to receive it the least. I need to remain humble and non-defensive at all times.

PRAYER: Dear God you have given me such great coaches, friends and co-workers that help me to see things that I might miss on my own. Teach me to value their input and advice and to remember that it may save me from a dangerous mistake.
