What NOT To Do With Insults

Reference: Psalms 89:50b  I carry in my heart the insults of so many people.

Observation: We may wonder why David is always suffering so much about how others are against him, how his enemies are treating him and how God seems to have abandoned him. Could it be that David had the not-so-healthy habit of carrying the insults of others in his heart? God called him "a man of blood" maybe because he always had to avenge the insults he received. The truth is that holding on to them is a recipe for unhappiness for any of us.

Insults will come. They are inevitable. The question we have to ask is whether we are going to let them slide off our backs or carry them in our hearts.

David’s son Solomon finally learned a helpful truth in this regard. He said that an undeserved curse will not stick. We can learn from this father and son. If you hold on to insults they will pull down your heart and attitude. If you allow them to roll off your back they will not stick in your heart or your life.

Application/Confession: I have been known to mull over, way too long, insults I have received. I need to learn to quickly let them go. I know what they can do to my heart and attitude and I don’t want it.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to let go of insults. Teach me to feel the hurt but to let You heal it so that I don’t have to hold on to them. I want to be free of heart.
