6/17/2009 - You Are What You Worship Psalm 135:18
You ARe What You Worship REFERENCE: Psalm 135:18 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.Observation: What is the "them" the Psalmist is referring to here? Idols. He is making the wise observation that we will become like that which we worship. Certainly it is obvious in the world around us. Our world worships celebrity and what are the results? We are, as a people, shallow, frivolous and focused on the outward at the expense of true character. We have become what we have worshipped. We worship material things and, especially, money. So, as our idols are, so are we. Just like it, we are insecure and transitory. Our values can be bought and sold and we have no real, solid foundation for our lives. Money and things are valued over relationships with real people. This principle, then, is one of the most important reasons to worship the one true and living God. If we worship Him we will become like Him. Do we want to be more Godly? Do we want deep, foundational, real values to be the hallmark of our character? Then we must worship God. If we do, we will be the loving and compassionate yet a hater of sin, just like He is. We will seek to do good and value life and truth and justice like He does. That is the kind of life we want to live and the kind of God we ought to worship.
