Truly Human, Like The Divine
REFERENCE: Genesis 5:1-2 This is the written account of the descendants of Adam. When God created human beings, he made them to be like himself. 2 He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.”
Observation: It is a very profound thing to say to suggest that we, as humans, are made to be like God Himself. What an honor and privilege we hold in the scheme of creation but what a responsibility we have as well.
God has made us, male and female in partnership, to create (not from nothing as He did, but to re-form what He has made into what our minds can conceive of), to rule (not absolutely, as He does, but under His authority over spirits, ourselves and, in benevolent care, over those He has given us leader responsibilities; our kids, people we direct at work and elsewhere) and show love and care.
Next to our privilege lies our responsibility; to be holy as He is, to do good, not harm, to be concerned about others and not just ourselves, to stand up for the weak and defenseless. This is also what it means to be made “like God Himself”.
Application/Confession: I must admit that I like the power much more than the responsibility. I need to be willing to be all God has called me to be, and made me to be, on both fronts. Only then can I, especially in partnership with my wife Gloria, fulfill what God intended me to be.
PRAYER: Teach me to live up to my creation. It was powerful. It implies great responsibility. Teach me to live like someone made in to be like You, God.
