I AM Dead
REFERENCE: Colossians 2:20-23 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 "Don´t handle! Don´t taste! Don´t touch!"? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person´s evil desires.
Observation: It seems like the most straight forward approach should be the best; just tell myself, "don't touch that, don't do that". It feels right, we are trying hard, disciplining ourselves. The problem is that the more we say "no" the more we are thinking about the temptation. The truth is that mere discipline can not overcome our evil desires. What can? Only running to God with the understanding that our old being, our sinful nature, was nailed to the cross with Jesus. TAHT PART OF US IS DEAD!!!! Remember that self-discipline is a fruit of the Holy Spirit in us. It is His job, His power that makes us holy and makes us capable of living a holy life.
How do we run to God? When we are tempted, get on our knees in prayer, break out the worship music and start worshipping Him, get into His Word, serve somebody. The key is to get close to Him and tap into the strength that only God, by His Holy Spirit can provide.
Application/Confession: This is definitely what I need to do. Everytime, everytime I try simple self-denial, I lose. I know that if I run to Him I can be strong.
PRAYER: Lord, I will run to You this week. Please change my heart. Remind me that the old man is dead and gone and give me to power to live in a new way.
