RUN!!!!!

REFERENCE: II Timothy 2:22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

 

Observation: How do we conquer lust? It seems, in our world, to be so pervasive and difficult to overcome. Our culture is so sexualized and lustful material is so available that living pure is very difficult. What helps? Here Paul gives this young man, Timothy, some very helpful suggestions. 

First, run away from it. If we want to be free from the bondage of lust, when it begins to express itself, get away as fast at you can. Turn the channel on the TV. Better yet, turn the TV off. Put down the book. Avert the eyes. Leave the situation where you are being tempted. Do whatever we must to get way!! Even to the point of changing jobs, leaving town or getting away from the wrong person. Realize that if we stay near to the object of lust, we will give in.

Second, it is not just a matter of what we don't do but what we do instead. Our minds crave stimulation. It is like eating; if we want to not eat the wrong thing, eat the right thing first. If lust is an issue, we need to fill our minds and time with doing the job God has called us to; caring for others and serving whenever we can. We need to choose to fill our minds with good and wholesome things. "Whatever is good, whatever is pure, whatever is of good report, think on these things."

Third, we need to pay attention to who we are hanging out with. Some of our friends will help us be more pure. Some will make it more difficult. We need to make sure that we are chosing to spend our time with those who share our values and commitment to a lust free lifestyle.

Application/Confession: Even though I am no longer a youth, lust is still a challenge. I need to take this advice and make sure I run as soon as illicit desire raises its ugly head. I want to stay free!!

PRAYER: Lord, please help me to remember what to do when I am tempted. Please bring this scripture and its principles back to my mind.
