Drug TradeI know that the war on drugs in a complex issue and I do not want to get into all the little poltical details of it, just shre a few thoughts of my own, as I do have some mixd feelings in some areas concerning it. I had just read this interesting article in this magazine I subsribed to called Utne about a monk is Thialand attemps to stop the drug trafficking in his country and that is what got me thinking about it. Though I am going to be mostly speaking of the drug trade within the US.
One of the biggiest problems I have is that I think the system is backwards in a way, there is too much focus on busting the users which I do not think is the best way to handle it. And I certaintly do not think that just throwing the usesers into jail for uptiene many years is going to do anything. There are ways to get drugs when you are in prison, and they are just going to be thrown back out in the streets when they are released to go back to what they were doing before with nothing being resolved. For one I think that ther needs to be more intervetive rebelitation programs for users rather then just jail time, maybe it could be like the 3 strikes thing, if you get caught three times using drugs, and after having been through rebillitation twice you then get a a prison secentence. But I do not think prison, espcially for younger people who might not be guilty of any crime, but just got mixed up on drugs will benifeit from jail, if anything it will leave them worse then they were before and they should have a chance at getting some real help. Of course it is different for people that have a long criminal record in addition to using drugs.
But there really should be more focus and attention on busting the sellers of course I know what they say, that if you knock out on cartell another will be there to take its place, and this might be true, but then the same could be said for users, espcially if they are not being offered any real help.
There are also arguments about just legalizing drugs, becasue that would at least prevent the violent aspect and criminal aspet from it. If drugs could be purchased over the counter then there would not be the big cartals, and addicts would not be as driven to have to comit violent crimes to get thier fix. In a way you could look at it as when aholcohol was prohibbited that did cause an amazing growth in crime becasue of what went into the bootlegging of booze. Though I really cannot say for certain what my thoughts are on having drugs legalzied. I could go either way on the issue and in some ways I do not really see why not, and in other ways I am not completely sure about it.
Of course another big problem in the drug trade is a lack of corrupation from the goverments of other countries where the drugs are comming into the US from, for they are mostly corrupt and a lot of the time the goveremnt has thier hand in the pocket of the drug money, or thier law enforcement can be easily bribed by the drug cartels, and that is a problem that very little can be done about. 10:19 AM - 2/9/2006 - post comment
