Controversial Thoughts

I know this might be a controversial topic and there are those that might disagree with me, but it is something that I have just been thinking about. It is a thought I have touched upon before in my mind, and someone menetioned it upon the radio today which brought it back into my thoughts again.

I of course find child molestation to be aboslutely adhorable and child molesters should be punnished to the full extent of the law I belive. It is my opininon, and well that many stuides done and many expets and professionals agree on, though not all, that it is something a person cannot be rehiblitated from. And I think part of that is becasue I do not think it is something anyone chooses to be, I think it is a wrong weiring in the brain that a person is born with. Now I do think that it is a human and willful choice wheather or not a person acts upon it. And those that do should be locked away and not let out in my opinon, but I fathom that there are people out there who have been wired that way, that know the wrongess of it and I have the wherewithal not to act upon it or put themselves in posistions where they might be tempted. And for those people I think it is sad, becasue I do not think it is thier fault that they are born with it, and just being born with wrong wiring in the brain does not make a person bad, it is your actions I think that make you a bad or good person. And for those that surpress it and wish to just live normal lives, I think it is say becasue I would imagine that could never be fully happy, and I would imagine that they could never really establish any sort of romantic relationships becasue thier brains are not desined to seek or want that. I could not imagine what it would be like to live with something like that.

Rewiring the brain

It's a subject I have taken an interest in from the perspective of having been in a relationship with someone who was abused as a child. I think that there is a very dificult decision to be made - do we treat the abusers as sick or evil - 'mad or bad' as it is often summed up. My instinct is that they are sick, evil individuals who should be severely punished. But if we do not punish them with the death penalty (which is not available where I am, and I porefer it to remain that way) they must eventually be released. Statistics show that imprisonment is only 30-40% effective at preventing re-offending, so the punishment does not seem to be much deterrent.

Treatment as sick, however, may seem like the soft option. But treatment can be up to 90% effective. While psychiatrists generally agree that pedaphilia cannot be cured, they argue that they can treat it, and treated correctly the patient would not re-offend. This is clearly borne out by the statistics, at least.

It seems counter-intuitive, but treatement seems the better option for the sake of future victims. Another statistic that is unpleasent for parents is the idea that they shouldn't know about pedophiles living near them. I'm a parent myself, but I have seen the statistics. Here in the UK, the sex offenders list is confidential and has a 90% take up rate among offenders. Where in the US states where laws exist that publish the equivilent of the sex offenders register the take up drops to 30% or less. So the question for parents is not the published: Do you want to know where the offenders are or not? but actually it comes down to: Do you want the police to know where the offenders are or would you prefer for nobody to know?
