How Happy is a Clam?

Posted in Thoughts

We have all heard the expression happy as a clam, and I am sure there is some reason for why we use it and how it came about to mean what it means, but if you really think about it. If you consider clams then you would think that the expression would acutally mean the oppisite of what it is saying. For instance you would say happy as a clam, if someone was in fact not happy. Becasue how happy can clams really be? Think about thier life. The only thing they can really do is sit there at the bottom of the ocean with hier mouth, or rather shell open, waiting for some fish or something to swim in, to trap it and eat it. They cannot really go anywhere, though I suppose they might be able to travel around a bit. But really it seems that it would be rather boring to be a clam. I suppose some people might like that sort of thing, having no reponseablites or anything to worry about, excpet for when people decide to collect you and throw you into vats of boiling water while you are still alive, or pry you open becasue for some reason they find your excreasons to be valuable. Or when other aniamls come along to eat you, and you are for the most part completely helpless to do anything about it.

And no I am not interested in hearing anyones agruments about your beleif that clam's have no concisouness and do not even know what is happening anyway, and cannot feel anything and blah blah blah.
