Child Obescity

Posted in Thoughts
The whole issue with child obesity has become rather common today, and now you see all the commercial on TV about junk food, and schools want to get rid of junk food in vending machines and instead have health food, of course I am not saying that it is bad to have children eating healthy food, but I think perhaps we are going a little over bored making junk food into some sort of evil. For one thing junk food is a part of being kid, I mean who never had junk food? It taste good, it is fun, and second of all junk food has been around forever, it really cannot fairly be called the problem if the whole idea of child obesity is something new, how can you blame something that has been around? It is not as if junk food has just recently appeared.

That is not the problem, what the real problem is that when I was a kid I spent my time out wrestling with the neighborhood boys, riding my bike, playing baseball in the street, going swimming, going hiking. Kids do not do that any more, they spend all their time seated in front of a TV screen, or a computer screen, playing video games, of course I am not trying to say that TV or video games are evil either, because that is also a part of being kid, sure I watched TV and played games, but that is not all I did, but now kids just don't want to get outside at all, and I think a part of that is also the parents fault because there is so much fear mongering, not to mention all the touchy feeliness of Oh my god, we cannot let our kids do anything where they might get hurt. I played hard, and I got scraped up, cut up, scabbed up, broke a leg, sprained, and twisted things. But you know what, that was part of being a kid as well.

Kids and Junkfood

I couldn't agree more with the points you've made. I also wonder at the advisiblity of dictating what kids are allowed to eat for lunch. At a time in their lives when kids are supposed to be rebellious to some degree, why on earth tempt that kind of situation more by deciding to censor their food choices? That just doesn't seem very bright to me.

Junk Food

Well when I were a lad, we would be lucky to get junk food once a week, rather than once a day. But the reason kids do not go out like that anymore is twofold: Reason (1) is that streets are for cars these days, reason (2) is that you dare not let your kids out of your sight. You keep them in because you fear what might happen when you cannot see them. Again, when I was younger I could disappear off for hours, as long as my parents knew the general vicinity I was in. I daren't do the same for my own children. And that is what is killing childhood.

Childhood

Well that is what I call fear mongering, and I do not agree with it, I was not a child in like the 50's, I was a child in the later 80s and early 90s, and things are not that different now then they were then, and there was always crime since the begening of manhood. Just that nowadays people are too damn paranoid about everything. They rather thier kids live in a bubble becasue something might happen.
