A TestamentThe Ones We Love Are the Ones Who Can Hurt Us Most Deeply
Sometimes we look into the face of darkness
and we see ourselves reflected there,
it feels as if there is no turning point,
no coming back from it.
We reach out for it, try and touch it,
to grasp ourselves and pull ourselves
back out into the light again, but
we cannot reach, fingertips just brush
those of our soul, but not enough to
pull ourselves out.
I cannot face this alone, yet
I am left isolated, when it seems
everything I built my life upon everything
I had hoped for, begins to crumble out
from under me.
There must be something, some last
pebble left to stand on, something that
is just enough to keep from tumbling into
the pit, and from that pebble with time,
with my blood, my tears, my pain, something
must be built up.
It will not be as complete as it was before,
there will be one stone out of place and not
recovered, as long as it is placed somewhere in
the back, where it will not make everything we
worked for fall again, but it will never be entirely
forgotten, a reminder.
This is what it is, some dreams may die,
some tears may be shed, but there has to
be some hope of some salvation left in the end,
something to build on, to make a new castle.
We cannot let ourselves die, even when it
seems unbearable and loss is heavy upon us,
there are still things yet to be had, to be reached,
we must strive through the agony.
This is the testament of my sorrow,
this is my grief, and my pain, this is
what I am and who I will become.
I am not ready to lie down, I will not
lay my sword at my feet, I will still
stand even as I bleed, but I will not pretend
that I do not feel like shattered broken
pieces of something that is never more.
You might have made me weak for now,
but once the ash begins to clear, I will
find new strength somewhere inside, and
I will have learned something from this.
I will not suffer in vein.
