Flag Burning

Posted in Thoughts

Once more they are trying to outlaw flag burning and have fallen short of one vote, now I personally am against a ban on burning the flag for a couple of reasons, the first reason is the obvious one which does not need much explination, it should be protected by the first admendment as freedom of expression, but the secound reason I think is one that most people do not really take the time to consider.

The way I see it is that the flag itself is nothing more then a physical tangabale object, matteiral, nobody cares about the idea of just bruning a flag in gerneal, but it is what the American Flag stands for that people get all riled up about flag burnning, yet those ideas and symbols are not tanagable and they are not in the object of the flag itself. They are ingrained in the heart and the soul.

For instance, the pentagram is a powerful symbol to me, it means a lot to me and is very imporant in what I belive, but if a person were to draw the image of a pentagram on a piece of paper and then burn it, that does not aflict me in anyway, that does nothing to change, alter, or damage what the pentragram stands for to me, it does not destroy the symbol of the pentagram, only a physical representation of it. Now it might make the person who did the act feel they accomplished something but the pentragram will still be the pentagram and it will mean the same thing it always has to me, so I could careless if they feel they need to do that for thier own reasons.

It is the same with the flag, if soemone burns a flag, it does not affect what the flag might symbolize to each individual, it does not change or alter the symbolizim, you can always buy a new flag if you need that tanagable physical object, but in the long run, burrning the flag is a meaningless act if people just hold what it means in there heart and not worry so much about the physical representation of it, it is things like the making the controveroy over doing it which give flag burrning the power it has, but what does it really accomplish? Nothing unless people decide to let themselves be affected by it. But if people just looked the other way it would mean nothing.

Hooray! Good fucking point!!

Another good point is to think about what flag burning means to the burner.

It could be personal.
Maybe the system betrayed them.
Maybe the system sent their son or daughter to some foreign land to get killed.
Maybe the system wrongly incarcerated them because of controversial evidence.
Symbology is such a personal thing, do we really have the right to get upset?

Untitled, but flag-related

In this matter I admire the US. Over here it is illegal to burn the flag, to use it in funerals, to deface it in any way, to write on it, etc.

There are even rules as to when you can fly it: on Royal Family birthdays, and during the April 30 thru May 5 commemorative period. If you fly the flag on any other day, they can actually fine you for it.

Most places do tolerate flying the flag if you have graduated from highschool. In that case you fly your satchel along with the flag.

Man, I'd love to have a flag roast every now and then. Guess I'll have to use the Stars and Stripes instead of the ole Red White 'n' Blue, or would that be illegal in the Netherlands, too? Could very well be.

There is a way around all this, though. The word flag is clearly defined and it constitutes a piece of cloth with exact dimensions and colors, and if you use one with the wrong dimensions, or slight differences in color, what you have isn't a flag but a banner, and with a banner you can wipe your ..., draw swastikas on it, write the name of the queen with manure, and then torch it if you want.
