Defending Paganism--In response to another blog

Posted in Arcane
I am a little spiffed right now to put it midly. There was someone whom had left a comment upon my blog, and it was a nice enough comment. I decided to check out thier blog, as I often will take a gander at the blogs of those who comment upon my own. Now there was a lot of mattieral to go through as it was a very large blog which is updated reguarly as my own. So it took me a while to get through it, and even so I did not read all of it. But one thing which I did happen to notice and found a bit ironic considring this person had commented upon my blog, and in a polite way. I have found upon thier blog some entires which are deeply offensive and disresepctful to my persoanl beleifs and I am sure they have no idea of what my beleifs are, perhaps they did not read that much of my blog as I am very open about it. Or most likely they would not have commented or been much more rude about it.

Here is thier exact words

I'm tired of people incuding atheists, pagans, witches and satanists as an organized alternative to Christian Religion those people are lost and misguided souls, anyone with common sense and to imply that you can have morals without being religious is the most absurd comment I ever heard.

Now, it is a given that Christans think I am going to go to hell and that my soul is lost, I can live with that, if they are so narrow minded to belive such then that is what they need. Though I peronsally do not think that Christans will suffer in the afterlife simply becasue they are not Pagans, I think it is a matter of who a person is and the deeds they do not which God they choose to worship and the way in which they do it which are imporant.

The thing that I find really degrading is for one grouping Pagansim, Witches Satansim, and Atheisn all together as an orginisation that is no more then an alternitive to Christanty. For one thing Paganism, Witches Santanism, and Atheism, are completely seperate things with indiviudal seperate practices. It can be argued that Witches fall under the umbrella of Paganism, but that is not nessciarly true. A person can be a witch without being Pagan, as well a Pagan does not make one a wtich.

Now I do hold a resepct for all reglions wheather I agree with them or not, and I belive in everyones right to practice whatever relgion is right for them, but I am by no means docile and passive so if someone wants to take a swing I will strike back. If this is the road they want to go down then if anything Christanty was in fact created to be an aternitive to Paganism. Paganism dates back long before Christanty does, and has for more ancient roots, further more the infulence of Paganism can be clearly seen within Christanity.

  • The Cross: Is viewed as being perhaps the most important symbol in Christanty, but they did not create it it predates Christanty and was orginaly used by Pagans to represent the 4 elements, as well as the 4 corrners of the earth.
  • The Holy Trilogy : The father, son and holy ghost, another important symobol or idealoy of the Christan reglion, but before there was the Holy Triligoy the Pagans had a concept known as the Tripple Goddess, The Maiden, Mother, and Chrone.
  • Christmass & Easter : Looked upon as being the most important holidays for the Christan religon, but they both have Pagan roots and many of the traditions kept and upheld today came from the orignal Pagan ceremonies not from Christanty.
  • Noahs Ark:  Pehaps one of the most well known of the biblical stories, but if you take a look at the Sumerian story of Gilgamesh you will find some striking simillarities between the two.
  • Baptism : The practice of baptism is long standing in the Christan tradition and is viewed as a way of clensing the soul and making holy, but water has always been belived by Pagans to have speical clensing powers and there were Pagan rituals in which a woman would sit within a body of water and sprinkle water upon her head to help clense her soul.
  • Jesus Christ: Yes even the great Prohet himself is not exempt, there is evidence to suggest that early imagery and ideology of The Savior was influenced by and derived from images and ideology of Apollo

Now with that being said I will also assure you that I did not become a Pagan just becasue I wanted some Christan alternitve as it were. My beleifs are just as deep rooted as that of any other relgion and wheather you agree or not deserve just as much resepct. I am a Pagan because it is what is right in my soul and I am acutely aware of the presence of the Goddess all around me and the Gods in everything which I do. I belive in a harmony with Mother Nature, not a supirority over her. But unlike certain other beleif systems, I do not beleive that everyone should or must be Pagan, but that every indivudal has thier own true path to follow, but that gives them no right to briade the paths of others. This world if made of many rich cultures, ideas, and sprituality, art, and so on. None of that would exsit if we all became carbon copies and followed one way.

And they say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun

Why can't people live and let live?

If you're at peace with yourself and you're not hurting anybody, why should anyone object? I heard and it sounds logical, that people created religions to fill needs. There are horrible diseases! Let's comfort people by saying it's God's will. People are killing people! Let's make it a comandment not to! December is such a dismal month. Let's make a holiday! People are coming down with trichinosis! Let's make it a sin to eat pork. and so on....
I'm not religious and I wouldn't do anything wrong. A lot of people who are religious do terrible things. Isn't that what most wars were and continue to be fought over?

Fightingfemale - 6:20 PM - 7/2/2006

Religion is only one reason why wars are fought

On a much broader level wars are fought to control.

Wars are fought by people who wish to control.
Whether it's someone else resources, or government, or way of life, wars are fought to decide who gets to control everybody and everything else.

And right now, America controls the world... and soon...... THE GALAXY!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I BELIEVE...

Every person has a right to beieve what they want in so far as they do not harm or be offensive to their fellow human beings. If a person is a good soul who lives an honourable life what does it matter what God or Supreme being he worships or doesn't? My Grandfather taught me to just go out and sit under a tree and converse with God or the Great Spirit and do what is right and treat everyone as you would wish to be treated. He said at the end of the day you do not need a church, chaple, mosque, temple or any building to be in tune with the Great Spirit. He also said that he didn't hold with going to church to be forgiven for back stabbing people and talking nasty when you left the so called house of God and then having to return the following Sunday to be forgiven again and think that's all okay. He said it's best to sit under the big old gum tree and talk to your God and never be nasty and disrepectful of your friends, family and strangers in the first place. I have carried this life lesson with me all through my life so far and it has worked for me thus far. I did get married in a church and my kids were Christened in a church but I am not a church goer. I know what I believe and what is right and what is wrong and that's what counts with me. So who ever said Pagans etc...are lost souls go get a life. You can't say that.
There are many ways and beliefs and if the people are good honest caring people who do not harm another living soul well... it's their destiny and goodluck to them. That's my two pence for what it's worth. (((hugs))) and big :-) from Dawnie.

I concur

I am a product of a mother who have decided to let their offspring decide their own beliefs when it comes to religion, I thank her for this choice. My grandmother (mum's mum) is a self confessed born again christian and has followed more religions than I can name in 30 seconds. Up until recently I was adamant I was aetheist. I chose this mainly due to influences from religious relatives breathing down my neck about how I was going to hell. Being that I am an antagonist (purely because I can be) I would say the opposite of what people tried to drum into me. I'm now 32 and have become interested in religion.

I have struggled with whether I believed in god and christ but thanks to an episode of CSI, Grissom said the words I have long felt but not been able to express ... "I believe in God but I do not believe in religion, I do not believe I should be told how to worship or believe in someone. (Or something to that effect)"

Personally, I don't worship anyone or thing.

My experience of religion has soured me against it. I have many questions on the topic hence why rather than asking various religious people for answers I'm going to attempt to see if I can answer them as best I can myself, by reading the bible. There are so many of them (different interpretations etc) so even finding just one bible (an original so to speak) is almost impossible. But I'm going to try anyway.

I applaud you on not only having the independence to have your own opinion, but also to defend it. So many people today just speak through the hole in their head with out appropriate justification or tolerance of others beliefs, or worse still, they believe what they are told to believe and speak out on that basis. I'm sure racism stemmed from attitudes similar to the latter.

Nelson Mandela said "Nobody is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, if he can learn to hate, he can be taught to love" I agree with this but with an exception and the same applies to religion and other such heated topics ... to learn something new, a behavior or a tolerance, you have to want to.

My Response To Your Defending Paganism Blog

I saw your "Defending Paganism Blog" so I thought I would respond in a respectful manner.
I actually have more respect for your blog then for some of the absurd replies although I disagree with it, except for Fightingfemale's which was well thought out.
I am a devout Catholic but I did not come here to condem you, thats not my style to do so, Its not my place to tell anyone that they are going to hell, any Christian that does so is simply wrong. Its Jesus' way to reach out to those in need, Jesus did not go to the rightous.
I will comment on your statement on your reference that Jesus was a prophet, Bush has made the same mistake, Jesus was and is the Son of God, now in the Christian Bible Jesus was referred to as a prophet by His apostles etc because at that time they did not realize exactly who Jesus was ie....In Matthew 16.....When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
My point here being that while it was appropiate for many in Jesus' day to refer to Him as prophet out of ignorance simply because they "did not know Him" its not the case for us today.
Now as for my response for those that blame God for wars in totally absurd God created humankind with free will to choose between right and wrong, it is the evil of man that chooses war, now in some cases war is justified, ie. WWII but by and large many wars are created by man , out of greed, or lust for power, or perhaps even pride and jealousy. These reasons men have wars you cannot blame God for.
In any event Silver Wind i have not come here to hurt or offend you in any way, and I hope anything I posted here you do not take offense to. I believe in your own way you are a beautiful person, I will pray for you i hope you wont take offense to that but it is my Christian obligation to do so and I must live up to that. I will leave you with this....In Catholicisn one of our greatest saints and Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine at one point was a pagan his Mother constantly and passionately prayed for his conversion....for nothing is impossible with the Judeo Christian God of Abraham
Sincerely, Heather

Religiou$ Zeal ...

I have to say that the opinions of many, many christians I have met mirror Heather's - while they believe that they are right, they respect the views and beliefs of others. There seem to be only two parts of the world where religious intollerance is trumpeted: Those where education and information is restricted and thus easily controlled or influenced by those that shout the loudest, and the USA. I'm not saying that intollerance does not occur elsewhere, but it seems more prevelant in the USA than in other western nations.

Why the USA? Because religion in the US is big business. I wouldn't buy a used car from most of the TV preachers in the US - I certainly wouldn't entrust them to save my soul! I am sure that some are genuine, but most strike me as being out for your wallet. They want the money. If you are exposed to different ideas you MUST be made to reject them out of hand to minimise the risk of your money no longer comming in. Hence they preach intollerance.
